Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42 and post the second sentence.

"Fuckin' dae it staunin' on ma heid,' he'd regularly heard them boast.

Well. I sat on the chill front porch step for 10 minutes at half 6 this morning and not a single parakeet making a sound. The first time ever one was not picked up from that part of the garden!

Years ago, I had a colleague who was petrified of going to the dentist. Being considerate and caring team mates, when he had a dental appointment, we would take it in turns to say, "Is it safe?" to him as the day progressed.

A dark green shed with horizontal wooden siding and a corrugated metal roof stands in a garden. A row of construction-style hard hats in white, blue, and yellow is mounted on the side of the shed. To the left is a small greenhouse, and in the foreground, there is a wooden fence, a bench, and various garden items. There is no text visible on the image.

It's a strange little place and not at all like I remember it from my last visit in 1971 ๐Ÿ™‚

A blue narrow-gauge steam locomotive idling at a station platform, releasing a plume of steam. The engine is loaded with coal and features an "R&G" monogram on its side and the number "12" on its rear bunker. Attached to the engine is a maroon passenger carriage marked "17-18". In the background are yellow railway carriages, a wooden signal box, and a signal post featuring a sign that reads "NO UNAUTHORISED PERSONS".

A panoramic, wide-angle view of a rocky coastline at low tide under a cloudy, overcast sky. Mossy ground, small tide pools, and dark stones stretch across the foreground, flanked on both the left and right sides by low stone walls. A row of residential houses lines the shore in the background.

Apropos of nothing, I've been to Ravenglass.

A map illustrating the distribution of the Rose-ringed parakeet in Great Britain as of 2017. The map uses green to represent "Resident" populations and blue to show "Post-breeding dispersal" areas. Text in the image reads: "Population in Britain" and "Rose-ringed parakeet distribution in Great Britain (2017)[11]". The legend also includes the text: "Resident" and "Post-breeding dispersal."

I also did a bit of googling, and apparently, those parakeets have been spotted in the Leeds/Bradford area. I can't say I've seen one in the village, though!

I did a remote session (I.e. left my phone on the front porch whilst I made tea ๐Ÿ™‚). I'll try and do a control test when I can.

A list of bird species presented with thumbnail images and corresponding names, each followed by an icon. The entries are: "Great Tit" with a blue checkmark and a search icon, "Ring-necked Parakeet" with a gold half-circle icon and a search icon, and "Eurasian Nuthatch" with a blue checkmark and a search icon.

I haven't done an ID session out in the front garden for a few days. I did one 15 minutes ago, and guess what? Maybe someone nearby keeps one in a cage, which would be sad.

Post your favourite film from the year you turned 18.

Released on 23 April 1981.

Not 'no suggestion that' but 'no proof that'!

"There is no proof that it was a report by Billy's son that landed his stepmother in an ICE detention centre."

I, for one, am shocked.

Yes

So, my assumption is that it keeps hearing what it identifies as a ring-necked parakeet but based on its distribution data, thinks that's unlikely

Informational text explaining how the Merlin app calculates bird observation likelihoods using data from eBird. The text reads: "Why does Merlin say some birds are "Likely" or "Unlikely" near me today? How do I read the bar charts? When you view a species' page and have a location selected, Merlin will tell you the likelihood of finding that bird in that area on the date you have selected. This likelihood information is based on observations of that species submitted to eBird. Merlin categorizes the likelihood into these three categories: โ€ข Likely - This bird is frequently reported nearby. โ€ข Unlikely - This bird is uncommonly reported nearby. โ€ข Not Found - This bird has not been reported nearby. The bar chart below displays this likelihood information for each week of the year. Green bars means the bird is "likely" during those weeks, while orange bars means the bird is "unlikely" during those weeks."

I think it is pretty accurate. The parakeet is the only one it's ID'd that I would question, and it's done that itself. If I get a bit of time, I'll see if I can find out how it arrives at its decisions. Is it just song or with usual distribution.

Nice. The usual suspects for me today.

However, if I do it in the front garden, it consistently picks up an 'unlikely' Ring-necked Parakeet!

Made in Bradford. The best brand of crisps. I shall brook no contradiction.
