I was down there for maybe ten minutes before the manager decided to just let me go back to work, presumably thinking we would have to wait entirely too long before we could promote anything.
That's what these presentations mean by "power of the individual". No real "power" of course, just the theoretical ability and consequent obligation to just consume responsibly. And ngl it does worry me how well-inculcated this is for basically everyone.
Either way to me it reeks of something like market environmentalism, the way everything comes down to personal consumer choices, operating within, well, markets, in which in theory you can effect change by buying either locally or not, "green" or not, etc.
Like I actually saw a slide say that you can support the planet with "green businesses" because they actually generate more profit than regular businesses, which seems iffy to me when you factor corps into it but either way it feels like there's something wrong with that framing.
Manager insisted on me seeing what turned out to be a little Earth Day group to promote a new project, which was fine for a while but then they got to "what can we do" and it all just comes down to "support green businesses, turn the lights off, recycle".
