Nothing humbles you more than rereading something you wrote at 2 a.m., thinking it was brilliant, and discovering in the cold light of day that you've written more compelling grocery lists.

If you're worried that all your characters sound the same, read their dialogue aloud. If you can't tell which character would've said each line, you need to rework the conversation.

"I'll just read one chapter before bed" is the most powerful lie the human brain has ever told itself, and I believe it every single night.

The five stages of writing a first draft: excitement, panic, despair, bargaining with fictional people, and finally finishing a chapter at 11 pm and eating an entire sleeve of cookies. I don't make the rules. 🤷‍♀️

Revision tip: If a scene isn't working, ask what your character is avoiding. Nine times out of ten, it's the exact conversation you, the author, also don't want to write.

I will absolutely stay up until 2 a.m. finishing a book, and then be furious at the author the next morning for keeping me up so late. How. Very. Dare. You.

My draft folder is less "manuscript" and more "archaeological dig." Chapter 12 has six versions, and I'm pretty sure one of them was written by a completely different person who hated me.

Writing advice nobody asked for: "Show don't tell" doesn't mean your character has to physically demonstrate every emotion. Too much of this starts to feel like a mime.
