Don't despair if you don't speak Dutch: the research on the 'Dane saga' itself was published in English in Open Access (🔓), along with the first English translation of this brilliant work of premodern imagination 📖

Dutch-speaking comrades!

When Bulgar khan Boris sent Pope Nicholas a list of questions about Christianity in 866, he asked if it was sinful for Christians to wear pants (breeches). Nicholas replied that he couldn't care less, as long as we 'spiritually wear pants' against carnal hijinks (spiritaliter induimur femoralibus) 🩳

Perhaps because an eventual change of design can then still be framed as an ergonomic upgrade in a future hardware release, presenting it not as a bug to be fixed, but a perk worth paying extra for.

I see the Bluesky team is finally taking an interest in late Carolingian historiography.

I'll see myself out.

I know I say this nearly every year, but with the amount of time precarious academics are *wasting* on job-hunting, interview prep, logistics around moving to new jobs, learning new institutional systems, etc etc., SO much actual work could be getting done. It's such a waste of time and expertise!

The time between fossil fuel crises is just going to keep shrinking, until there's no discrete single "crisis" - just one unbroken prolonged state of global suffering due to fossil fuel unreliability

The best time to ditch fossil fuels was 30 years ago. The second best time is now

Excellent - we did a similar thing in Liverpool a few years ago, and I remember it being well-received. There's really not enough actual information out there for (recent) PhDs looking to publish their work.

Today's vikingism: the Up Helly Aa galley sheds of Shetland. Found in communities across the islands, they act as centres of operations for 'squads' as they prepare for local celebrations of the fire festival, including the construction of a galley that is set aflame as part of the festivities.
