Yesterday, when I signed they were aiming for 6000 signatures. Today there are almost 15,000 and they are aiming for 25,000!
If you haven't signed and want to support the scientists at the NIH that are trying to prevent its dismantling, please sign.
You can do it anonymously!

Phage people: Rich Losick and I are combing the world looking for T4 rIIB mutant FC0 (also known as P13). FC0 was the starting point for Francis Crick's beautiful 1961 paper on the triplet nature of the genetic code. We want to sequence it. Anyone have it in an ancient stock collection?
The comment period for this ends in 3 DAYS. Please leave a comment telling them EVERYONE should be able to get covid boosters.

This is what a lot of us have been worried about.
This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs.
BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD...

A researcher in a blue lab coat holds up a beaker with yellow liquid in it.
This month's interview is with Marco Dueñas! Marco is a PhD candidate in Sabeeha Merchant’s lab in @berkeleymcb.bsky.social and @natureatcal.bsky.social.
He chats with us about his recent paper in @pnas.org, overcoming research challenges, and more.

Hi all, I'm hiring a junior specialist/research technician for my lab at UCSC. An ideal applicant would be an undergraduate who would like more research experience before applying for grad school but all are welcome to apply 🧪

Very well-deserved Erin.
The TAL episode released on Sunday was pretty incredible and expands on much of the story.
What an episode that was. Hard to listen to but I was in awe of these people.
Harvey Mudd College is looking for a new tenure-track faculty member whose research and teaching interests sit at the interface of biology and climate. If that sounds like you, I very much hope you'll apply. Application review starts September 18th.
Posting this here too cuz I'm just that #proudPI... New pre-print ! Check out Allison Daitch's follow up to her discovery of OPGs in #Caulobacter and their role in envelope integrity. TL;DR the OPG synthase OpgH is actually essential for morphogenesis in Caulo! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
I teach this paper in the Experimental Design grad class in our redesigned grad curriculum. I think it does a great job of teaching students how to articulate and test hypotheses with experiments in an abstract way so that the idea of "experiments" is not necessarily attached to any expectations

All y'all asking for codes to invite scientists and Sci comm folks better be inviting Black, Indigenous, LGBTQAI+, and other marginalized folks. Otherwise this isn't going to work. 🧪
I think Bluesky is in the Baby Groot stage. We all know the potential once more science community friends, universities, foundations, and fellowship centers join in. It's going to be fabulous! Until then, we just have to keep watering 💦 baby Groot and watch him dance and grow 🫶
Skype a Scientist is a wonderful program that matches scientists with classrooms. If you are or if you know a teacher, a librarian, or anyone who could benefit from this great (and free!) program, please sign up here and spread the word: https://www.skypeascientist.com/sign-up.html

Sigh, some people still seem to be bumping up against the paywall for this piece despite my understanding that it would be free to read for 24 hours.
Look, if anyone with Long COVID or ME/CFS needs to read it and cannot, email edyong210@gmail.com and I'll personally send you a copy.

Think about who you share invite codes with - how can that introduce biases/inequity? especially for science Twitter trying to gain momentum here, this matters.
