Man lying down and taking a selfie with a quokka (cute Australian marsupial)

Last week, I attended the Australian Statistical Conference in Perth.

I reconnected with old friends, made many new connections, and had the privilege of listening to some excellent research presentations.

Here I am with one of my colleagues, Dr Quokka Q. Quantile.

This boy has been so good over Thanksgiving - very friendly to everyone and no biting despite the extra excitement!

Slide is titled: You don't need to use LLMs.

Science is a process of collaborative meaning making, by which we try to understand the world

Even if AI were perfect, we rely on it at our peril โ€” it is not science if we (i.e., humanity as a whole) do not understand and cannot recapitulate all parts of it

I very, very rarely use LLMs myself. You can give yourself permission not to. Donโ€™t FOMO yourself into it

Conclusion: Don't rely on something you don't understand and can't control

If you must use LLMS:

1. Treat them like you would an intern: only use them for things you can easily and thoroughly check

2. Make your process as robust as possible

3. Be aware of your own (human) cognitive biases

Getting nervous for the talk I'm about to give at a workshop about "using AI to drive impact" which features slides such as these.

Power-divergence copulas: A new class of Archimedean copulas, with an insurance application This paper demonstrates that, under a particular convention, the convex functions that characterise the phi divergences also generate Archimedean copulas in at least two dimensions. As a special case,...

Another preprint! www.arxiv.org/abs/2510.06177

I noticed that the convex functions that characterise f divergences can also be generators of Archimedean copulas. Here, I look at the case associated with the power divergences.

This seemingly 'simple' problem took me to some very strange places.

Green cheek conure eating a segment of mandarin

Boris fighting off scurvy by eating a bit of mandarin. Don't worry; I took it off him after a few bites so as not to upset his little tummy (crop?).

Bayesian copula-based spatial random effects models for inference with complex spatial data In this article, we develop fully Bayesian, copula-based, spatial-statistical models for large, noisy, incomplete, and non-Gaussian spatial data. Our approach includes novel constructions of copulas t...

Preprint out! arxiv.org/abs/2511.02551

Green cheek conure sitting on a shoulder

My anti-research assistant, Dr Boris B. Bayes, PhD. His research interests include
(1) Optimal methods for screaming louder than 120dB,
(2) Finding excuses to bite, and
(3) Figuring out where fruit and almonds come from and how to make them appear on command.
