Hello, Bluesky! We, the staff of Scientific American, are pleased to announce we have formed a union with @wgaeast.bsky.social. Just as mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, we are the powerhouse of the publication, and we’re excited to have a new way to contribute to its success.

This woman is a handpicked Trump supporter from Arkansas and she is less anti-trans than the median Atlantic columnist
I think it's bad for the President to threaten to annihilate an entire culture and i do not think you are being alarmist if you take his threats seriously and literally.
Pete Hegseth spent more than a minute torturing the concept of "North" to avoid having to explain why the US government gets to determine security & defense policy for all of the territories he's including in "Greater North America", including Greenland (??) and Ecuador (????)
This is unspeakably brutal. ICE must be dismantled.
For one thing, I am just not interested in all my interactions with my computer resemble dealing with a politician who has been caught for sex-crimes and is apologizing but totally intends to do it again.
It's not True Spring or False Spring, but a secret third thing: our society's continued reliance on fossil fuels has broken the seasons, and we can no longer map the weather onto the cycles we grew up with.
He saw in Cuba a place where that better world had become real. I think about him often, but especially this week.
While he hated the theocracy, I'm sure the attacks by our government on his country of birth brought him no joy. Who would take joy in the deaths of so many?
He was jailed, and escaped jail to flee the country, and ended up in the US. He had thus far lived a comparatively less eventful life as a doctor at a clinic in his American town, but still held on to those few months when a better world seemed within reach.
I met a man in Cuba who was a doctor in Iran during the days of the Revolution in 1979. He spoke of those days as a beautiful time — between the fall of the Shah and the ascendancy of the Ayatollah. As a left-wing revolutionary, he and his comrades refused to disarm under the new Islamic government.
ai is a rhetorical technology.
when it produces a list of permissible targets, its value is not producing targets but producing permission
American soldiers should disobey illegal orders. The President cannot unilaterally declare war. All troops who still pledge loyalty to the United States and its Constitution should, theoretically, mutiny, or refuse to serve.
(I'm not an idealist so I doubt this will happen, but one can hope)
things every single republican president of your lifetime has done
- started a war in the middle east
- completely destroyed the economy
no war no borders no cops no prisons no to all of this shit
Just a reminder: The Big Ugly Bill took food away from millions of people to pad the pockets of billionaires and corporations building data centers.
It's unfortunate that "The TV wants me to develop a gambling habit" is a true statement about reality and not the ravings of a madman.
We, the employees of the NLRB, are calling on members of Congress to reject the Senate’s proposed funding deal unless it includes meaningful reforms for ICE and CBP’s operations.
Our Union has never endorsed a government shutdown before. But we believe we have no other choice.
Management at LGBTQ+ Victory Fund has withheld raises & bonuses from unit members AND refused to bargain in good faith. That is ILLEGAL under the NLRA, so we filed unfair labor practices. We will not stand by and allow discrimination against the workers who make this org run #1u
Screenshot of January 29, 2026 Executive Order: "Addressing threats to the United States by the government of Cuba"
The only threat that Cuba poses to the United States is that their continued independence is a reminder to every other country that they don't have to bend the knee to Yankee imperialism. It is for that crime that our government wants them destroyed. I know whose side I'm on.
Today is, among other things, a reminder that you don't get a general strike by posting that we should have a general strike.
You get a general strike—on the rare occasions you do—by the long slow slog of building organizing power with those around you in response to local conditions.
Also obviously c) tax cuts and other incentives to private corporations take money out of schools & other public services.
Anyway, it's a fun new sleight of hand to keep an eye out for!
These things could theoretically drive prices down, except a) we have enough monopoly & cartel behavior that prices can be kept artificially high and b) with deregulation, externalities won't be priced in — cutting red tape usually means hidden costs to workers & communities.
A fun new trick some Democratic politicians have learned is to say "affordability" but mean "Abundance": deregulation, rapid development, more public money for private corporations.
ICE took two Princeton residents into custody, including a father of 4 after dropping off his son at school. The failed practices of ICE have led not to community safety but to the breaking up of families. The pretense that their mission is to deport dangerous criminals has been shown to be a lie.
protestors have painted what appears to be a tunnel on the side of the mountain, causing ICE agents to run into the mountain at full speed.
disgusting.

In a MAJOR win for our immigrant community against Trump's abuses, the NJ legislature passed an immigrant protections package that:

This is what leadership looks like!
Trump and Rubio won't stop in Venezuela. Responding to recent comments from the Trump administration, DSA demands: Hands off Cuba! Black and white photo of Rubio and Trump speaking to the press. We see a Gulf of America hat in front of Rubio. In background, a color photo of a Havana street and a photo of Cuba's national flower, the White Mariposa.

George Conway's new Congressional campaign has texted me twice today asking for money but will not answer the simple question of "why do we need to run a recent Republican in a D +60 district to beat Donald Trump?"
