In this piece, @nspmartin.bsky.social, @rolandkappe.bsky.social and I summarise our @wepsocial.bsky.social paper, finding that GCSE choices inform political party support into later life
Amazing!! It's a great paper too👏👏👏
*Academics of Bluesky:* Do you know a great UG/PG student with excellent quants skills?
@nspmartin.bsky.social and I are advertising a great fully-funded PhD on MRP and minority voting with our friends at Ipsos, so send them our way! ✌️

Yes I agree - it's the most likely co-ordination point in a constituency that is really looking for one. Open question in my mind if yet another bar chart leaflet can make a dent though, will Greens (or others!) be able to convince voters that this is truly something different?
But I also wouldn't underestimate the effects of more education - especially universities - in liberalising younger people, even STEM students e.g. as in this panel study from @elizabethsim0n.bsky.social @danjdevine.bsky.social @jwfurlong.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Our study suggests that studying some arts/humanities/social science subjects (compared to studying other subjects) pushes people in a more green/authoritarian/liberal direction even in school www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Interesting column discussing the implications of our work on school subjects and party choice among teenagers 📊👩🏫@ralphscott.bsky.social @rolandkappe.bsky.social www.thetimes.com/comment/colu... I wonder if the hype about humanities in an AI-era labour market will swing things back the other way
Can't wait until they discover Levy-henge
I wrote briefly about this in Britain Elects academic.oup.com/pa/article-a... (ask for a copy if needed!), and Parveen Akhtar published this great piece just recently on the same phenomenon link.springer.com/article/10.1...
It's also not really about Galloway anymore - like many political entrepreneurs, he showed that there was electoral potential in his positions - but once that had been demonstrated, other - perhaps more skilled (Faiza Shaheen, Leanne Mohamed, IA MPs) - political actors stepped in
Would never underestimate Reform in a by-election, but I would say that the 2024 WPB candidate in this seat underperformed compared to the potential voters here on that issue. This from yesterday seems likely more consequential www.politicshome.com/news/article...
Now to find another faculty with similarly-sized letters for an intercampus Scrabble game… @manchester.ac.uk
Big purple letters spelling CANOE, with paper boats resting on them
And this week, a new anagram! My favourite one yet, due to the little paper boats that have been added 🛶
Big purple letters spelling OCEAN
Later in the semester, I was happy to see a new variation 🌊
Big purple letters spelling BACON
Only problem; the sixth letter blocked access to the staircase, so it was quickly moved away, leaving the more delicious but not OfS-certified BACON 🥓
Purple letters spelling BAECON
Last September for some reason (I don’t know why, it’s not my department), these big letters appear on the floor below me, spelling out the name of a popular degree programme BA(Econ)
Non-fiction: Emperor of Maladies, Siddhartha Mukherjee
Fiction: Day of the Jackal, Frederick Forsyth (also kind of cool for the political stuff 🤓). Or the Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John Le Carré.
And Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood
Very happy to get a contributor’s copy of Britain Votes 2024 📚🗳️@louisevthompson.bsky.social @hansardsociety.bsky.social I wrote a short chapter (last autumn!) on ethnic minority voters in the general election, including preliminary thoughts on independents doi.org/10.1093/pa/g...
% of ethnic minority Britons who say each of the following is an acceptable term to refer to the non-white portion of the UK population
"Ethnic minorities": 66% acceptable (net +45)
"BAME": 49% (+15)
"People of colour": 42% (-2)
"Global majority": 27% (+4)
