I googled tips for flash fiction structure but made the mistake of phrasing it "can you write..." so AI Overview happily spat out a pretty boring flash at the top of my search results. Not what I was looking for but it did make me feel better about about my own writing which is 10x more interesting.
The cover of WIFE SHAPED BODIES features many kinds of strangely colored and shaped fungi -- with a feminine face and hands worked into the unsettling mix.
Portlanders! Are you pining for a brain-melting discussion of weird and terrifying mushrooms? Then join @lauracranehill.bsky.social and I at Powell's (Burnside location) at 7 pm tomorrow to discuss her amazing debut novel, WIFE SHAPED BODIES.

Cover of The Ghastling magazine, Book 23 "Tales of Ghosts, The Macabre, and the Oh-So Strange". Against a mottled gray background, is a black and white drawing (or possibly block print) of a gargoyle sitting pensively, a red sun in the distance behind one wing. At the bottom of the cover, the stories authors are listed, including yours truly, Allison Pottern at the from of the list!
See my name all tiny at the bottom! My Ashkenazi ghost story "Soul Candle, Living Light" found the perfect home in UK penny-dreadful-style mag The Ghastling alongside other spooky tales. Look at this gorgeous cover! And it's fully illustrated!

I just turned in a draft of my first review for ARB! I did it for the love of reading/reviewing but supporting @ancillaryreviewofbooks.org 's kickstarter will keep community-driven literary criticism alive and make it so they can compensate future writers and reviewers for their work!
Thanks so much for the shout out!
@mynachang.bsky.social's interview with editor @chriscampbell.bsky.social about NEW YEAR NEW YOU was featured in this week's Intergalactic Mixtape a long side a lot of other super cool articles, links, and reviews
🚀💫
The title "NEW YEAR, NEW YOU: A Speculative Anthology of Reinvention" across the top, with the cover in the middle of the title. Below are several endorsement quotes, as well as an image of an astronaut and octopus tentacles entering from either side against a backdrop of stars. “I read the whole thing twice... meticulously crafted.” –Myna Chang, Microverse “Delightful, thought-provoking, and multi-faceted...” –Naseem Jamnia “Intense and beguiling...” –Sherwood Smith “Nuanced...” –Locus Magazine “Complex and experimental...” –SF Book Reviews
There's has been a lot of discourse lately about reviews, especially for older and indie titles. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, released in 2024, got lovely coverage from indie & mainstream reviewers alike. I wanted to highlight them again w/ a big THANK YOU 🧵
(and we're still happy to give out review copies!)
ahhhh congrats @jamsternazzy.bsky.social for making the ECO25 short list! What an incredible lineup.
Interesting - I was at LBF and that wasn't what I saw, exactly. There is a lot of interest in litRPG, which some people *see* as romantasy-for-boys, but to be honest even that's dubious, if you look at who's lining up to get books signed at litRPG conventions.
okay this is a CALL FOR ESSAY PITCHES!
I'm looking for freelance writers for Reactor Mag, a long-running SFF website (formerly tor dot com not the publisher). Im the senior editor for book content, focusing on contemporary sci-fi, fantasy, gothic, horror, and genre-defying books.
(details below)
okay there are a LOT of people asking what i thought were easily googleable questions about pitching nonfiction writing. so here is a quick adapted version of a pitch workshop i did at FIYAHCON a few years ago. every good pitch should answer these questions:
