In 2017-20 a pretty holistic economic and political agenda took shape for Dems:

-The post-GFC recovery was too slow, in part because of inadequate fiscal stimulus. The labor market had been structurally too weak for too long. We needed a big public sector push in climate investment, EV’s, etc

It’s not going to happen for small orgs I suspect. They’re going to be left to face the onslaught.

I’m pretty sure that’s basically what Anthropic is trying to do over the next few months before open source models reach this level of power.

I mean, the story of Gary at the SEC is a tragedy, in part bc he took a job he didn’t want or was equipped to do, made a lot of mistakes early on in staffing and issue selection, and then refused to change course.

I’m biased personally of course, but I look on it now with more rueful sorrow.

Non-Fungible Insights: Blockchain Decrypted The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and its Chair Gary Gensler are making good on their promise to increase oversight of the crypto markets. On May 3, 2022, the SEC announced that it would…

In part that’s because you can only focus on a few special priorities. For Amanda’s boss, the big focus was crypto, and they didn’t have resources for things like special focus on options or private credit. www.winston.com/en/blogs-and...

SEC disbands its climate and ESG enforcement task force The Securities and Exchange Commission said it will return its attention to greenwashing if it sees another spike in risk, an agency spokesperson told ESG Dive.

The enforcement staff is about 1000 people, a supermajority of whom do the consistent blocking and tackling over time. Then there are special task forces put together. My boss created an ESG enforcement task force in 21; Amanda’s boss shuttered it in 24. www.esgdive.com/news/sec-cli...

Couldn’t take the resources away from the crypto unit (seriously).

I cannot recommend this thread strongly enough, including that part of the problem is that the affluent doesn’t realize they’re a target of much middle class resentment.

The whole recent dynamic of consumer-facing businesses that exist due to capturing a large % of rich consumer spending and then offer some capacity and a worse experience to non-rich consumers leads to a lot of societal tension.

These people just want to take credit for everything. Profound idiots. The Trump Zohran thing had nothing to do with ideology or their brand of populism and the one place they expressed policy agreement was on YIMBYism which they’ve spent all year calling neoliberalism pejoratively.

BlueSky has most traffic when Twitter is experiencing server issues from a third party service.

Lesson there, deccentralized tech stack is better.

“It’s not that I’m for austerity, it’s just that I’m against bailing out AI, crypto, private assets/university endowments, and I’m fine with canceled Thanksgiving flights and missed paychecks as long as Republicans take the blame for it.”

Bluesky is a site explicitly founded by cryptocurrency libertarians with the idea that it would be a decentralized platform where users would be free to choose the open-source moderation and algorithmic feed tools they wanted, and by accident acquired a power userbase that hates all of those things.

We’re all just waiting on more data to see how this is unfolding. The next big data is probably a poll at the 15 mark as folks miss their first paycheck.

Less dominant in the swing states than I expected. No stations in AZ, none in WI, none in metro Atlanta.

Serous question: which segments of capital would you say are acceptable to bring into the coalition?

Harris lost because inflation was 7% for two years under Biden because literally every pundit argued that Trump was caused by neoliberalism and we needed to aggressively try to flood people with money and eliminate unemployment.

The replies on this very leftist website re:tech/science/anything zoomer men are into are indistinguishable from Free Republic circa 1999. The worst thing about the left is the Nazis have somehow stolen the utopian vision

Probably worth thinking about the implications of online media gatekeeping shifting from Brooklyn journalists to attracting people succeeding on YouTube/TikTok. Do hot people want higher taxes?

“You have to always hit the current optimal policy bullseye, and you get little credit for overshooting to avoid repeating past mistakes” is tough medicine, but seems to be the right heuristic based on the last 20 years of politics.

Supporters of rivalrous socialism/socialism in one country are the absolute worst of the bunch: Stalin, Pol Pot, the Kims, arguably Mao.

I mean, the explicit argument is that ring fencing it would shrink it down. I don’t think that’s a gotcha.

I mean, multiple members of the Admin made clear they were trying to shrink it, ringfence it, send it to zero, etc after the positive 2022 EO, including here on this website.
