I know there are people out there with ulterior motives, but… some of us are just kind because that’s who we are.

That doesn’t mean we don’t have other areas we fall short or that we’re not also capable of being mean. But some of us are genuinely well-meaning and pure intentioned.

Moss-Gathering

By Theodore Roethke

To loosen with all ten fingers held wide and limber
And lift up a patch, dark-green, the kind for lining cemetery baskets,
Thick and cushiony, like an old-fashioned doormat,
The crumbling small hollow sticks on the underside mixed with roots,
And wintergreen berries and leaves still stuck to the top, —
That was moss-gathering.
But something always went out of me when I dug loose those carpets
Of green, or plunged to my elbows in the spongy yellowish moss of the marshes:
And afterwards I always felt mean, jogging back over the logging road,
As if I had broken the natural order of things in that swampland;
Disturbed some rhythm, old and of vast importance,
By pulling off flesh from the living planet;
As if I had committed, against the whole scheme of life, a desecration.

Very few things on this Earth are worth getting up at 5am & driving 90 minutes to see. This was.

Nature' is what we see—
668

"Nature" is what we see—
The Hill—the Afternoon—
Squirrel—Eclipse—the Bumble bee—
Nay—Nature is Heaven—
Nature is what we hear—
The Bobolink—the Sea—
Thunder—the Cricket—
Nay—Nature is Harmony—
Nature is what we know—
Yet have no art to say—
So impotent Our Wisdom is
To her Simplicity.

The Voice of the Rain

And who art thou? said I to the soft-falling shower,
Which, strange to tell, gave me an answer, as here translated:
I am the Poem of Earth, said the voice of the rain,
Eternal I rise impalpable out of the land and the bottomless sea,
Upward to heaven, whence, vaguely form'd, altogether changed, and yet the same,
I descend to lave the drouths, atomies, dust-layers of the globe,
And all that in them without me were seeds only, latent, unborn;
And forever, by day and night, I give back life to my own origin,
and make pure and beautify it;
(For song, issuing from its birth-place, after fulfilment, Wandering,
Reck'd or unreck'd, duly with love returns.)

Paul Laurence Dunbar
1872 –
1906
By the stream I dream in calm delight, and watch as in a glass,
How the clouds like crowds of snowy-hued and white-robed maidens pass,
And the water into ripples breaks and sparkles as it spreads,
Like a host of armored knights with silver helmets on their heads.
And I deem the stream an emblem fit of human life may go,
For I find a mind may sparkle much and yet but shallows show,
And a soul may glow with myriad lights and wondrous mysteries,
When it only lies a dormant thing and mirrors what it sees.

...And read some good poetry.

The useful rage of Godzilla Godzilla stories warn that humanity’s attempts to control the uncontrollable inevitably invite catastrophe.

“But what keeps us hooked on Godzilla and other titanic terrors scuttling forth from the Earth’s fissures is a simple fear: meeting our end because we happened to be in the wrong place at the time,” @mctelevision.bsky.social writes.

What I love about WFH is that one minute I'll be reading docs to help me understand a legal term, & then moments after my husband walks in the room & starts up his version of conversation, we're researching why so many koalas have chlamydia.

I have silently side-eyed every man who chimes in to say how much they like One Battle After Another. If you enjoyed that i suspect that you don’t exactly see us as human beings. Which is fine. But worth noting it for my files.

Should not be surprised the movie that basically treats revolutionary politics like cosplay and fetishizes, waters down and turns Black womens contributions to dual power politics into a farce would win Best Picture over a movie about the importance of marginalized art, yet I’m still disappointed.
