Why I’m Resigning from the NSF and Library of Congress I cannot participate in systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging.

"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging."

Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council.

I wrote about my decision in TIME.

Ages 0-4 are the most important, emotionally & intellectually, in human development.

Yet, in the US, we have a very high rate of childhood poverty and a broken child care system.

Congratulations to New Mexico for leading the way forward for high quality, free child care. Other states must follow.

Today is publication date for our Fragilities volume!

"At a time when it may be easy to fall into a defeatist melancholia, if not outright pessimism, the book is an invitation to think from fragility to build life-affirming politics and ethics"

It's got an amazing line-up & it is open-access! 🤓

Incoherence isn’t so much a sign of hypocrisy as coalitional speech. The voice of the politician speaks many ways at once. It’s all umbrella and dog whistle, or strategic ambiguities — necessarily so.

Purity fights are about shaping coalitions as power contests. The aim is to set the boundaries of the “we” and/or to decide who gets to run the club. Internal contests and contradictions are constant and normal, as is damage and violence caused to the members.

Friday DOGE fired almost everyone at NEH.
UVA, VaTech, etc should be staffing up with this expertise ASAP. Also NIH, NSF, NEA.

It will fold into various production processes. And still, people will write because they are worlding, voicing, building interiority, sorting out. If we are lucky and wise we will permit them that space and time to develop, never confusing what simply cannot be speeded up.

AI will probably be a bit like PowerPoint (a topic I’ve long been obsessed with: computationalculture.net/one-damn-slide…) in that it’s going to reconfigure many styles of writing quickly to a relative sameness in format.

Vantage, point of view, voice, subjectivity, understanding, capacity for expression—these are the targets of the practices and craft. What do you think? How do you know? Where do we go from here?

1 year ago 1 1 1 0

Nevertheless, there is something in the interiority reconfigured which takes real time. AI won’t speed that part up — it’s a wetware thing — you almost compost, cook, marinate, metabolize, and live into a new mind. It’s more like gardening or pregnancy than search or speed.

This does not generate isomorphism between mind and text. Sometimes the disappointment with the artist or thinker has to do with the fact that they are not who they are on the page, or maybe they’re not a good person so art is no redemption.
