My favorite example of a design solution is the fog in Silent Hill 1: due to the PS1's hardware limitations, the draw distance is very low, so the fog/darkness effect was used to obscure the environment. This clever solution to a graphics limitation became an incredible iconic feature of the series!
Limitation drives ingenuity in design. Using the slop shortcut not only gets you an inferior version of your vision, it denies you the opportunity to learn and innovate by coming up with your own solution.
It makes you a weaker creator, full stop. If you care about your craft, care about honing it.
Also if you're a comics creator, be sure to check out @cartoonist.coop . They are doing incredible stuff fighting to improve and protect worker rights in the comics industry. They also provide a lot of opportunities and resources for indie creators!
The thing that makes me most angry about what's happened to webcomics is how the scene has been imitating the shitty industry more each year:
companies are taking advantage of artists, grinding them up, and leaving them to dry after they get their use outta them.
Webcomics should stay indie.

My partner wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until their late 20s so they grew up receiving a lot of messages from the adults in their life that they were dumb or inadequate. That stuff takes a whooole lotta work to unlearn. But I'm kind of glad we both flunked out of qualifying for Gifted-ness.

YEAH it blows! I've had people at tables tell me they were there selling on behalf of the artist who was at a different con. I refuse to buy from proxy booths even if I like the art because c'mon.
I think it'd be cool if we had a larger discussion on the direction of conventions in NA- how expensive they are, how little artists make back, how much artists have to put in to even get accepted- And let's not forget how ridiculous the expectations are for presentation and merchandise with tables.
also infuriating how big artists game conventions by having tables at multiple cons in the same weekend, selling via proxy. Sometimes artists will have a table in vendors AND artist alley. Many are connected with the event runners so they get in each year, giving less room for new faces to table.
I've had this thought many times. You shouldn't need to have a sleek shop-style display to get into artist alley; the cost of entry both financially and time-wise is ridiculously prohibitive. The need to keep up with trends leads to a flattening of variety in what artists are selling, too.
