holy crap, beside not allowing the viewer to engage with the content the way they prefer, having an actual -rule- against lurking is such a massive red flag

When I have to run ads I usually pause the game and wait to mitigate that, but twitch themselves should handle it better.
It's hard to do ads on live content the right way, but even just letting the viewer still hear the stream during ads would go a long way

Oh absolutely. Twitch is one of the only sites where I don't have AdBlock enabled because I wanna support the streamers I watch but the way they do ads is way too intrusive.
The player becomes tiny and the audio gets muted on content that keeps going during the ad break, and you miss stuff.

And yes, I'm aware that ads that won't progress unless you actively look at them are nothing new, but usually they have been used on more dodgy websites than a mainstream streaming platform like Twitch.
Aggressive techniques like these only further justify the use of ad blockers.

I'm getting more and more convinced that companies are just using Black Mirror as an inspiration at this point
