Here’s an idea for “improving science” - don’t appear on panels with anti-science ideologues like Jay Bhattacharya and Emily Oster.

My band is called Aces 38, and I often use an ace of spades as a logo. Got this today at brunch to mark my table... seems auspicious.

I am focused on the Stand Up for Science events today, but I will dig into these data early next week.

I was continuously funded from when I started my independent career in 1988 until I move to NIH in 2003, usually with multiple grants.

Here is the "effective payline" for each institute, estimated (by Claude) as the percentile where one can expect 80% probability of funding from a logistic regression fit. The effective payline has gone from a historic ~12% to 6% in 2025.

back in the day students thought they'd learned something once they'd highlighted it in a book. now they think they've learned something when their chatbot has summarized it for them

Same here at UC Davis. Total waste of time, and just a cya requirement. If you add up all the faculty hours wasted on this multiplied by faculty pay for those hours it would be a substantial cost to the taxpayer.

I'm definitely not a fan of Reagan, and not even a huge fan of Newsom though he's growing on me a little... but let's not ding him for simply following CA law

2 months ago 1 0 0 0

For all the dolts on here who think they're clever... Newsom is required by law to proclaim February 6 as "Ronald Reagan Day." This obligation stems from California law (SB 944, 2010) that mandates the Governor to annually proclaim this day to honor the former California Governor and U.S. President

I had two thoughts after watching some of the Pam Bondi hearing today. The first is that one of the Senators she insulted and lied to may well be the Attorney General in the future. The other is that although Nixon did not go to prison, his Attorney General did.
