The Urine Drug Screen is Useless #criticalcare #emergencymedicine #toxicology
The Urine Drug Screen is Useless #criticalcare #emergencymedicine #toxicology YouTube video by EMSwami

Urine Drug Screen is useless in ED
-False (+) common due to cross-reactivity
-False (-) common: only looks for THC, cocaine, BZD, amphetamines, pcp + opiates
-Can’t tell you if patient’s symptoms are from the drug

All of this makes the test clinically useless

How will the dismantling of USAID affect U.S. relief efforts in Jamaica? USAID was the lead American agency in disaster response. Now that it's been dismantled, questions are arising about how effective U.S. relief efforts will be in Jamaica after the hurricane.

A Cat-5 hurricane has devastated Jamaica.

USAID, with over 6 decades of disaster response expertise, no longer exists. The State Department can't fill this gap.

Dismantling federal agencies has real consequences.

Finally time for a dip in Chicago River.

300 swimmers looped through downtown Chicago this month in the first official river swim since 1927, a milestone made possible by decades of cleanup, which has also lured back fish, beavers, and a giant snapping turtle.

ACEP addresses the safety and efficacy of Tylenol (acetominophen) for pregnant patients in the ED. Read the full statement via the link below 🔗

In case you’re wondering why ACEP is (sort of) singling out Dr. Houry, it’s because she is an emergency medicine physician who (I believe) still takes shifts at Emory Hospital, in addition to her work in CDC leadership.

She genuinely works on the front lines of public health.

I have not seen my classmate since 2018 but she reaches out when she has a major case or research to present or life update. I’m so proud of her major career milestone presenting now as an expert in her specialty.

Just finished 2.5 hrs of chatting and reviewing with my medschool classmate on her slides for her infectious ds peers. More than 15 yrs since we met, we’re in different specialties and countries now but we still talk like the hopeful 1st yr students refining our research paper

Why am I doing this?” he said recently. “Why am I beating myself up writing papers about the moons of Jupiter when there’s people starving in the world? Papers that only five people in the world are going to read, and two of them are my enemies?”

This is the best critique of academia I have ever read. @newyorker.com www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Incivility contaminates the OR just as much as a break in the sterile field.
When it happens:
➡️The target is rattled.
➡️The witnesses feel it too.
➡️Focus narrows → core tasks can get missed.

The UpToDate flow chart about types of hyponatremia was literally the last straw on me deciding not to go into IM.

I know enough for EM! Order urine lytes and call to admit before they result and I might have to interpret them. 😅

How My ADHD Went Undiagnosed for Decades — And Why It Matters

ADHD doesn’t always look the way you expect. I was recently asked to write a letter to my younger self for a project Find the ADHD Girls is working on. It made me realize how many signs of ADHD I had growing up ... and how easy they were to miss.

Archaeologists are unearthing the most powerful women who ever lived Astonishing new archaeological finds and ancient DNA analysis leave no doubt that throughout prehistory women were rulers, warriors, hunters and shamans

Astonishing discoveries by archaeologists and analysis of ancient genomes mean we must rethink the emergence of patriarchy and the roles of women in prehistoric societies.
