This is very nice recognition of Hal Gabow! Hal spent his whole career as faculty at CU Boulder, and his legacy looms large for us. (Hal retired in 2008, and I unfortunately have never gotten a chance to meet him.)

With institution, too!

Few things beat listening to Shostakovich Symphony No. 11 on a cold, snowy, and foggy day.
Mid-April snow in Colorado is, perhaps surprisingly, something that makes me love Colorado!
Definitely of interest; thanks!
Ah, makes sense! Also thanks for the note…that’s puzzling :).
Can you say any more about the quantum physics analogy? I don’t know enough quantum physics nor history of quantum to get the analogy, haha
Catch up on SFI’s first Community Lecture for 2026, Crossroads Democracy Panel.
The panel featured Jenna Bednar, Samuel Bowles, Hahrie Han, Katrin Schmelz, and David Krakauer as moderator. It explored the history, economics, psychology, and politics of democracy.

A recording of my talk at the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings. From the war in Bosnia to some of the current research in math and democracy and the urgency of our work.

2000s kids had Dinosaur Train!
Great stuff!
Notably used in Kimbrel & Sinha’s O(n^2) algorithm for matrix multiplication verification using just 1 + log n random bits! I really like both results :).
Thanks so much, Huck, and also a huge thanks to everyone in @bouldertheory.bsky.social!
Thank you Sophie! :)
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be starting my Ph. D. at MIT EECS in the fall. I’m excited to work on problems in computational social choice theory and mathematical democracy. I’d love to meet other researchers in TCS and EconCS in the greater-Boston area; please reach out!
The German mathematician Gerd Faltings is the winner of this year's Abel Prize, an honor that is regarded as mathematics’ version of the Nobel Prize. He proved a conjecture that had been unsolved for six decades, using connections between numbers and geometry.

Congratulations to Charles H. Bennett and Gilles Brassard on receiving the 2025 ACM A.M. Turing Award! They are recognized for their essential role in establishing the foundations of quantum information science and transforming secure communication and computing. awards.acm.org/turing @umontreal
Not necessarily! A cut is just any partition of the vertices. So for example, if you take 4 vertices where edges form a ring, a cut could be the partition given by odd-numbered and even-numbered vertices. In this case, *every* edge crosses the cut.
"Dyadic numbers can be represented by binary trees," uh? Sounds more like dryadic numbers to me
"Freedom from fear is a central goal of the system of separation of powers."

Attitudes toward #STEM are highly influenced by one’s own educational experiences.
Did you know? Python plotting library matplotlib uses an LP solver to figure out its subplot layouts
Stick figure drawing saying holding up an X-ray of a hand saying "What does that mean? How much error should I expect? Where does the uncertainty come from?" with an arrow pointing to the right. (Arrow may not be relevant to the image.)

I will also say that I really enjoyed them and found even just the initial call helpful in making more fine-grained preferences, and in having a point of contact at each institution.
As a data point, I applied to 19 programs this cycle, did Zoom calls with 9, and of those have heard back positively with most, and haven’t heard back from the rest. I’m having more calls to help me decide!
I do have friends in other disciplines that have had significantly many more calls though.
