I would hope that outsiders could look beyond our current government when evaluating Americans, but I would also hope that they would not supply our current government with heavy weaponry. ๐Ÿฅฐ

watched these on the false pretext they would serve as an exemplar of pop culture, an overpreparation for future schlock, and turns out these movies aren't popular except among a cult of weirdos

so now i say i watched them because of my idiom

didn't have to take notes though, don't know why i did

you can basically adapt a lot of video games to film by making them tone pieces with little to no dialogue, but those probably won't make the kind of money that justifies their production

the vibescession is, in a way, a crisis among white collar prognosticators more than a crisis in data science and statistics. The numbers haven't changed in a qualitative sense, the relationships kind of have, but it's the lack of creativity in interpreting these numbers that's rampant

and i'm positive they've updated the model, tweaked at its edges over time. It just doesn't say what people think it says. It's an imperfect tool. Economists (no more rigorous a profession!) believe assembling enough tools gives them oracular vision, and are flummoxed when the visions don't pan out

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

"but the consumer economic sentiment survey says--" it doesn't say what you think it says. It says the same things it's said, in the same terms, for probably going on 40 years now. You know the Consumer Confidence Index goes back over a century?

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

the vibescession is easy to solve: unless you have some kind of elitist attitude, the worries of the vast majority of people are correct, and the numbers and models you're looking at are wrong
or inaccurate
or outdated
or whatever other term you'd prefer instead of "wrong"

What I like best about the Artemis II photos is that it was taken by actual humans. An actual person had to frame it and manually adjust settings. It's their own artistic rendition of what they thought looked best at the time, something no probe, rover or unmanned spacecraft can take. it's art

I'm not accusing anybody of anything, more just thinking out loud so i stop thinking about it in my head. But it helps to notice such things. That way you can say, whenever anybody brings up your critical attitude to media:

i'm calling it a kernel bc it's really small, but it is a central idea in the game: the great ones have children rarely, and part of this is due to Greatness. If they had kids all the time, becoming a great one wouldn't be the kind of civilization-ending effort it is

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

i believe he was asked about what motivated the hunting of great ones and their kids, or why immortal squid gods care about kids at all, and his answer had this kernel in it. Discussing the hierarchies involved, he used the analogy, "Even in advanced countries, the birth rates are lower, right?"

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

have often seen bloodborne (one of my favorite games) described as "lovecraft without the racism" and this is almost wholly true, but there is a very small kernel of it in there, and it does come from how rare great one kids are

it's this bit from the futurepress guide, an interview with miyazaki

The bunnies look at a bedazzled portrait of a brooding young man that says, hottie, cutie man, things of that nature.
GRASSY: Any chance either of you know who this is?
DAFFODIL: Wow. No but I wish I did.
GRASSY: What do you think he does?
ASTER: A rock singer, absolutely.
Notice the pugnacious jacket.
DAFFODIL: He invented a machine.
DAFFODIL: A machine that makes smoothies at the same
time every day.
DAFFODIL: And it helps women live. It helps women to live!
