But that quote which is often misattributed to Harold Wilson – "a week is a long time in politics" – is true. A year is a lifetime. There is plenty of time yet for what another Harold, he of Stockton, did actually call “events, dear boy, events.”

Polls like these give us a good idea of the direction of travel, and can even shape the narrative enough to influence voting behaviour, as Jac said today. Together with the new voting system and the expansion of the Senedd, change is coming.

The overwhelming feeling was that this poll – if it were to come true on election day – would represent a monumental shift for Welsh politics. Indeed, perhaps for the first time since the dawn of devolution, people are considering that the impossible might just be possible.
