THREAD. When my parents' cat Bridget went missing, my dad, to try to ease his worry, painted her on a variety of historical ventures. Soon, these numbered in the dozens.
After much nagging, my dad has had some postcards printed of this brilliant series: michaelcoxmoredaysthansausages.bigcartel.com

During WWII, four brothers from the same Jewish family signed up to fight against the Nazis. Only one of the four brothers survived.
His grandson is the current President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Wouldn't it have been wonderful if European leaders had stood up as one and told him that he must somehow have got into the wrong room, that they were there to discuss the future security of Europe and had no time to listen to this blatant hypocrisy and trail of trivial ultra-right grievances?

I love how Trump, Vance and Musk style themselves defenders of free speech, while simultaneously banning government agencies from mentioning climate change or diversity (inc biodiversity!), equity and inclusion, or even possessing maps which show the Gulf of Mexico.
Torquemadas the lot of them.

The Power of Supercitizens
Lurking among us are anonymous heroes who quietly amplify social cohesion. Here's what we can learn from them.
In a world gone mad, the most powerful acts of resistance don’t involve posting on social media, but engaging in your community. Here’s my piece from last summer on the value of Supercitizens, who don’t just provide the glue that keeps us together, but also live longer because of it.

An arched stone entrance framing a tree behind it
A beautiful arched entrance that enhances & heightens the beauty of the tree
However, the tree could be felled IN AN INSTANT, and with no penalty whatsoever to the axeman. Yet the arched entrance is protected BY LAW
I value the archway, but the tree is priceless

The chronicle of a fire foretold | Rebecca Solnit
The current fires in Los Angeles are reminders of the costs of forgetting
I wrote a thing, because these fires are in the increasingly common category of shocking but not surprising. Neither unprecedented nor unforeseen by those who study the subjects.....

Old oak tree with twisted branches in autumn woodland of ancient oaks
A single 400-year-old ancient oak produces 234,000 litres of oxygen a year while soaking up carbon dioxide, and can support more than 2,000 species of bird, insect, fungus, and lichen. Nature is amazing - we need more of it, not less. Please repost if you agree 🌳

One of my favourite things about this time of year:
Working to restore the East London tidal marshes, amongst the frosty reeds, as the lower winter sun goes down in a blazing ball of red & gold, framed by the incongruous contrast of the soaring concrete overpass of the North Circular

It took me a while but I finally finished to recode the 300 programs of Jean-Paul Delahaye’s book "Nouveaux dessins géométriques et artistiques" with p5js. The book was published in 1985 and features classic generative algorithms.

We don’t talk enough about the importance of standard components in a greener economy. Engineers always say “but *our* design for battery/connector/module is 2% better than a standard one”, missing the point that it’s far worse for repair, reuse, recycling & minimising extra “stuff”. It’s maddening.
