My father told me if I’m not making money from my writing, it’s a waste of time. What a thing to say! I’m already disillusioned enough as it is!

Today the student who has called me “Mr. Eric” all semester said I was his favorite teacher. That little kindness brightened my day. 😭

Hey, authors. We’re all struggling to sell our novels. What you don’t want to do is reproduce a missing persons poster of a child just to garner clicks. I know you might think this is edgy, but it’s every parent’s nightmare. Try not to sensationalize traumatic moments just to shill your books, okay?

What fights the self-doubt, the self-loathing, the impostor syndrome nibbling at your soul every time you write? The absolute sheer terror that your work might not be that bad. There’s a possibility - no matter how small - that a reader will like your stories. Keep that faith. Keep writing.

After string of bad publishing news over the past few weeks, (I’ve read the word “unfortunately” more times than I’d like.) I taught a Kurt Vonnegut short story in class today, so there’s that.

Thinking about the time I told a family member I wrote horror.
“I never knew you wrote that.” Her face wrinkled. “Horror scares me.”
Yes, that’s what it’s supposed to do, Aunt Agnes.

Thinking about that book signing at a local convention where a woman came up to my table and looked askance at my books.
“It’s horror,” I told her.
“That’s where you lost me,” she said and walked away.

Cut 300 words from the latest short story. The editing process allows us to view our stories with a fresh perspective. Paragraphs are tightened. Darlings killed. Brevity rules. Onward! #5amwritersclub

The anxiety that I’ll never be published again haunts me. I’m afraid writing is futile, that I’ll waste all my time, that I’ll never be good enough. And yet, there are books I want to write and stories that need telling. Writing is hard, people. Be gentle with yourselves. #5amwritersclub

Finished writing one of the darkest short stories I’ve ever written. My fiction is getting darker, violent, and more cynical lately. Plenty of shattered bones and broken hearts. #writer

That SNL skit about new emojis was hilarious, and then I remembered my latest novel has a demon fight on an aerial tramway.
Tramwaaayyyy!

Let your stories obsess you to the point where you’re practically feral, a word-addled mess and mad prophet stumbling from the woods babbling nonsense. Write to enshrine these feelings, capture a bit of this delightful madness you’ll share with the world. #5amwritersclub

THE OCEAN HUGS HARD is a mystery with the salty whiff of the ocean, a tinge of nostalgia, and a dollop of mind-shattering eldritch horror.

Today in class I let the students pick a topic for their free writing assignment. They chose to write about a zombie attack in New York City during the Fourth of July. The stories were imaginative, creative, and surprisingly wholesome. #teaching

I’m just a writer editing a story for an anthology that will publish in June. One of the most visceral and violent stories I’ve written and one of the most poignant. Stay tuned….
