I wrote this song for today—No Kings—and played it at the Middletown event. I’m sure that version was better, but I don’t know if anyone recorded it…

Aug. 14, 1924. Lee Adams, a lyricist who teamed with composer Charles Strouse to write the songs for Broadway hit “Bye Bye Birdie” and the “All in the Family” theme song “Those Were the Days,” is born in Mansfield, Ohio. Adams (right in first photo, left in 2nd) turns 100 today.

So sorry to hear about Charles Strouse. I worked with Lee Adams, Joshua Logan, and Charles (who we all called Buddy) on a musical starting Ray Bolger, ALL AMERICAN, in which he wrote the unforgettable song “Once Upon A Time”.
Breaking News: Charles Strouse, the Broadway composer behind hits like “Annie” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” has died at 96.

Figgy peeks out of the blankets with a smile as he snuggles beside his mama. Overhead, Cheddar peers, with an annoyed expression.
Figgy stole my spot
Under da blanky
Beside da mama
I fink about hitting
I fink about hissing
I fink about taking it bak
Insted I climes on top da blanky
I skwish da Figgy a liddle
I kurl up beside da mama
I purr and fall asleep

As the daughter of the lyricist, I agree! I remember my father saying that the movie was basically a vehicle for Ann-Margret. And wasn’t there something about a turtle? I wasn’t born in time to see the original, but prefer every stage version I’ve seen to the movie!
