Anyone who was a student in a science or engineering department in the last two or three decades, and who were taught MatLab™, has heard this story already.

Story is also on the Torygraph web site, although that alone is not sufficient to ensure that it is true: www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

That section of "Airplane" was what I thought of as soon as I saw the OP.

Not included on the plot: Principals/VCs and their enormous, inflation-proofed emoluments.

The Israeli govt rep who was on #BBCR4 #wato today was lying at flank speed about this and trying to shout the presenter down.

(Presenter was Sarah Montague, IIRC. Sadly, she isn't on here, or if @sarahmontague.bsky.social is her, it is an unused account.)

Is there any confirmation that this story is true? It is shocking if it is true, but the only places I have seen it are here (not the Scottish newspaper with a similar name) and on RefUK-operated @politicsuk.com 's account.

It has been pointed out by @samcoleridge.bsky.social that this story comes from a RefUK-supporting news outlet; there does not appear to be any confirmation that the story is true.

Hmmm --- thanks for the info. I'm glad that I didn't immediately assume it to be true.

Very much hoping that the Streisand [1] effect kicks in here. It is way past time that the proper political parties started putting the boot into RefUK like this.

[1] There have been recent arguments that this should be called the "Mae West effect, see bsky.app/profile/trac... and replies

Screenshot from the excellent Merlin app showing a picture of the entirely non-excellent woodpigeon: a greedy bastard destroyer of garden vegetables which belongs in a pie.

This is what @cornelluniversity.bsky.social 's #merlin #bird app gave me as my "bird of the day". The only place I want it as a bird of the day is in a pie, preferably served with some of the vegetables it didn't eat due to being in a pie.

I suspect the answer is to try again later. @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social is currently having a major IT outage. (I have unpaid honorary fellow status there, so I still get all their circular emails.)

Just in case anyone follows me but missed @plashingvole.bsky.social 's thread, I have updated my plot of pay in a UK university in real terms. Detail at blogs.ed.ac.uk/hughpumphrey... and linked posts.

Plot of pay at a UK university in real terms as a percentage of the 2008 value. Real terms is defined in several ways.

As quite a few people have liked this post today I have updated the plot to the current month.

A Year of Decay and Transition In 2024, the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) detected the first sustained decline in excess stratospheric water vapour from the 2022 Hunga eruption. After two years of plateau, decay had begun. That turn...

Worth noting that this plot featured in this blog post by my colleague Xin Zhou (周欣), advertising the last paper to appear with my name on it before I retired. The Door of Discontent has since been sanitised. communities.springernature.com/posts/a-year...

Of course, this is at a university where the principal has famously awarded himself inflation-busting pay rises on an already eye-watering salary.

Plot of real terms pay in a UK university as a function of time since 2008. It is down to between 80 and 85% if you use CPI, CPIH or other people's pay to define "real terms". If you use the deprecated RPI measure it is down to about 72%

This is how pay has behaved in a UK university ( @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social ) since 2008. CPI, CPIH and the deprecated RPI are measures of price inflation. Tot WP and Reg WP are measures of other peoples' pay. Details blogs.ed.ac.uk/hughpumphrey... and linked posts.

Not that I object on principle to annoying the Welsh, but I feel that they would definitely consider this to be treading on their territory.

Ditto in the City of London, if its achievement of arms is to be believed.

For instance, no politician from any decent party should miss the opportunity to ask this question when the media are listening. (3/2, sorry)

I cannot help but snigger at someone called "Randy" who writes papers to do with sex and is in the Epstein files.

It is important that a distinction is made between RefUK and the rest. Because RefUK are not a normal party with a leadership elected by their members and MPs. They are a company which exists solely to make Frogface Farage and Dubai Dicky richer. (2/2)

11 hours ago 4 0 1 0

If true, this is shocking.

All the normal, decent political parties should be shining a light on every single offensive thing that RefUK does, from Dubai Dicky failing to pay his taxes to council candidates saying racist stuff. (1/2)

Fabulous, but I do think that the website should follow @notayesmansecon.bsky.social 's daily updates (e.g. bsky.app/profile/nota... ) and refer to "biomass" as "awful biomass". (Plug for @privateeyenews.bsky.social as they have a go at Drax from time to time.)

. . . and let's remind ourselves: two of those billionaires are Rupert Murdoch (Times, Sun, etc) and Lord Rothermere (Faily Fail).

Other @anassarwar.bsky.social hints:

(*) Use an account name based on the domain name that the Labour party already owns. That way, we know the account is genuine.

(*) Post some content, FFS.

I am forever rescuing my wife's phone where she has installed some terrible piece of malware by mistake. Typically these apps fill the screen with ads and disable at least some of the available mechanisms which you could use to un-install them. (2/2)
