On #InternationalWomensDay, let us remember all women lawyers in Asia who work on human rights. #ChowHangtung, a Hong Kong barrister and a former vice-person of the Hong Kong Alliance that organized the annual candlelight vigil to commemorate June 4 crackdown is still detained.
I've launched a Substack! My latest post is on a course teaching Ukrainian civilians how to survive Russian drone attacks. Drones now cause the majority of battlefield casualties in Ukraine. Russia uses them to target civilians, NGO workers, and journalists.

A man was convicted for turning his back away from the field during China’s national anthem at a FIFA World Cup qualifier last year.
Prosecutors argued that such actions “could attract copycat behaviour and undermine Hong Kong’s image as a mega-event capital”

Myanmar’s resistance fighters build makeshift structures of bamboo and tarp to simulate the building-to-building battles against the military.
I will be posting videos from a previous reporting trip to Myanmar, where I spent time with Garuda, an armed resistance group fighting in the civil war.
Part two of award-winning photographer and filmmaker @laurelchor.bsky.social reflections on this year’s Rio de Janeiro carnaval is now live.
Noosphere contributor @laurelchor.bsky.social spent time with a 23-year-old rebel fighter in charge of a unit repurposing agricultural drones to drop bombs.
During the afternoon #mentalhealth panel, Vicki Tsang from Mind Hong Kong, Paul Tait from @afpnews.bsky.social, Jing Yang from @theinformation.com & freelance journalist @laurelchor.bsky.social shared their mental health tips for daily work & how they have learned to deal with stress and burnout.

I thought I was having a stroke or something when I suddenly caught a strong whiff of goat while walking on the street in Kyiv. Turns out someone was taking his pet goats for a walk!
Stores selling military and tactical gear have become ubiquitous in Ukraine — it’s a huge business. Across from this big store selling camo clothing and gun holsters (which has expanded since my last visit), another store decked out in holiday cheer sells Christmas ornaments and winter clothing.
My apartment didn’t have power or water today — disruptions that most Ukrainians have become used to — but Kyiv was looking beautiful tonight.
New paper in @science.org finds across 8 studies & multiple platforms, time periods, & definitions of misinformation that (a) misinfo evokes more outrage than trustworthy news & (b) people are more willing to share outrage-evoking misinfo without clicking on it

Took this photo of Jeremy Tam, then-#HongKong lawmaker, during a protest in August 2019. Ten days ago he was sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison under the National Security Law for his involvement in informal primary elections organized by pro-democracy activists.
🙋🏻♀️ thank youuuuu
Was at the gym in #Dnipro this AM when the power went out. Walked past the wreckage of a bldg destroyed by a strike a yr ago to get here (I happened to be in Dnipro for that too). Ppl outside #Ukraine are often surprised at how “normal” life can seem here, but you are constantly reminded of the war.
Diners inside the Asian-fusion restaurant “Myao” in Dnipro, Ukraine.
Tonight I had dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in Ukraine, “Myao”. Just last week Russia launched its first nuclear-capable intermediate-range ballistic missiles here, but as usual it hasn’t stopped Ukrainians from going on with their daily lives.
