Love the gems
HMM
Nice.
I figure I come by all this library love honestly - my dad used to be on the library board in the town I grew up in.
I've put it back on hold - I want to pay more attention to the language this time - I'll let you know what I think.
(Also, right now 12 of my holds are "in transit" and have been for a LONG TIME, so it's not as if I always have heavy turnover. I go to the library once a week to pick up holds and often it's just 2-3 books there for me.)
So, I actually want to give it another go. I had just finished reading HYBRID HEART by Iori Kusano, which I loved, and was hoping this was similar. And it wasn't. I ended up skimming it more than reading it.
Ha. Twenty currently on hold. I think that's the limit.
But I use my holds primarily as a way of evaluating books more closely. They get sorted into "nah, not interested", "maybe later", "read now", and "buy for later reading".
I actually read in the moment maybe a tenth of what I request.
And now that I've poked through his list of translations I've added I WANT TO DIE BUT I WANT TO EAT TTEOKBOKKI to that library list, lol.
Only A MAGIC GIRL RETIRES, though I have THE MIDNIGHT TIMETABLE. I keep thinking I've read more of his b/c I've read other Korean authors but they've been translated by others. And I have TOWARD ETERNITY and CAPITALISTS MUCH STARVE on my library hold list. But I've always appreciated his posts here.
Hard same.
I do have it on my record (so that I can point to it with future doctors) but mostly going to the long COVID clinic was helpful in the sense of confirming what I already knew.
Fantastic read.
"There is a spirit of democracy that exists all around the world. People are always asking me about what is lost in translation... what is interesting to me is what is found in translation. What we have in common is much more interesting to me than what we don't have in common."
Disney promoted pixar’s films disproportionately more than their own to manufacture consent for the closing of their 2D animation department, which had gained significant bargaining power over payment for their work due to the success of the Disney renaissance
Also TIL about “shamstep” which is a fusion of traditional dance music from the Levant (Balad Al Shams) with hip hop. Here’s a Palestinian group 47Soul performing “Dabke System”: youtu.be/uEaSgzRdSv0?...
The first issue was fabulous, I'm very excited for this one.
Whoops! Just accidentally posted a call for our food systems horror and Weird fiction anthology, open to submissions this September. 👀

I was just having the most amazing dream. I was there for opening day of a new CTA train line that was also a roller coaster. Genuinely sad to wake up, both because it's 5:20am and because the dream was so fun.
"Super readers"? Is that a booktok thing?
I'm picking up The Meursault Investigation from the library today!
I've been baking more this past year because cookie prices are ridiculous, I have been refusing to buy them out of principle. And oldest likes to bake with me. So win-win.
Who knew it was cookie day?😂
Non-agricultural people are being ignorant about the difference and uses of hay and straw in my mentions as a result of this discussion so let's break it all down in broad strokes but finer than these to explain why no one is using hay for a mattress in a medieval setting.
The Lord moves in mysterious ways but you don't have to. Use your fucking turn signal.
I disabled everything I could find for ai settings in my account and STILL Gmail is like "do you want me to help write this email uwu" NO, I want you to jetison into deep space. I want you to sail past Jupiter and then keep going. You'll eventually meet the Borg and even they won't want your ass
Me too! Oldest had the day off and I owed The Dude some cookies, so.
Boo. Impressed by your ability to set good boundaries.
