RuneMeisterKris Archaeologist, historic consultant, gamer, DM, dad, and dingus. I dress in a janky "Viking" costume and talk about history while playing games.

Also yall should subscribe to my YouTube so I feel societal pressure to post more videos since it's the easiest way for me to engage in independent #archaeology & #archaeogaming research/public outreach in my preferred subject areas while still being able to be a goof

Making a Real Viking Soup to See If I'm Gonna Live
Making a Real Viking Soup to See If I'm Gonna Live YouTube video by RuneMeisterKris

Oh hey I did my first YouTube video in over a year where I sat in my backyard 4 days after getting surgery making a historic #VikingAge recipe for Leek & Onion Soup (which some sources claim were used to triage gut-wounds) & tested whether I was gonna survive. I did, btw 👍

A medieval illustration of a hedgehog with grapes skewered on its spines

It was believed in medieval times that hedgehogs had spikes so they could roll over fruit to carry home to their children, which is not true but is a really cute idea

Day 2 God of War: Ragnarok from an Archaeooogist with a Master's in Viking Runestones!
How well do they render cultural material compared to historical counterparts? Are mythological figures represented in ways consistent with how they were viewed? What about the fish???

First week back in the field post surgery/winter paperwork break... It's amazing the sorts of things the human body can recover from.
Especially one that's been put through the wringer by a gung-ho pilot with a "that's a future me problem" approach to self care

The craziest part is that you can export your creations as STL files for 3D printing or digital use in other projects (with credit). If any other archaeologists/historians are looking for a way to get decent reconstructions of historic blades give this a shot

Last night we tried the new blacksmithing game @bladesonggame.bsky.social & made a historically accurate #Viking #ULFBERHT #Sword! Using the Rosenlund Sword, the Ballinderry Sword, & other unnamed examples from National Museum Denmark for reference, I think it came out pretty good! #Archaeogaming

🐲 Urnes-style Uppsala memorial runestone (U 614) from Torsätra, dating to the late C11th.

The runemaster was most likely Visäte.

My sons school put them on remote learning all week because its "too cold" w/ daily tasks to complete for all 1st grade classes including GYM. They then sent a message reprimanding parents for not doing all the assignments quick enough. Where should I send the Invoice for being a Substitute Teacher?

Just gave a "Career Day" Q&A about Archaeology to a class of 3rd Graders as a favor to a friend and I was lowkey impressed with how well they listened and asked questions. Maybe the kids are alright after all haha

Spent a few hours at the Swedish History Museum recently, and among all the shiny viking objects on show, this simple carved duck from Birka stood out to me. Ascribed all kinds of sublime and symbolic roles, it may have simply been a kid's toy; a beloved, ordinary plaything without frills or fuss 🦆

I am flabbergasted that 100 men vs 1 gorilla is even a convo. We evolved as PURSUIT PREDATORS biologically constructed to outlast most animals. Even without tools, we take shifts to enrage the gorilla by yelling, baring teeth, etc. & kite it around for a few hours preventing it from sleeping till ☠️

Last night I streamed the Oblivion remaster and I'd safely say I spent about 2.5 hours alone on inventory micromanagement, shuttling rusty iron gear to the Imperial City Market, and doing the Speech minigame to max my merchant reputation and buyback rate.
Semi related, but yes I am mentally unwell

4E was a tabletop MMO. It allowed for a character that could be brought around into games at your FLGS easily with mechanics that favored and streamlined combat in a way that was easy for new players while giving every class a fantasy/magic feel.
It wasn't my cup o tea, but I do use some parts in 5E
