I've been working on building maps for Thick As Thieves for the past few years. It's an extremely small team and I'm very proud of what we've been able to accomplish!
The introduction to the world of TaT will be out May 20th
Incredible series ๐๐
LHoD is a great jumping-in point! I also recently read all of the Earthsea books and they rocked my world, I would VERY much recommend them (but that's like a whole 6 book series and I was trying to keep my recommendations brief lol. I'm a fast reader ๐ตโ๐ซ)
(Also I saw you recommend Works of Vermin and went to pick it up last night, excited to read!!)
The last two are definitely of an era and there's criticism that they don't go far enough in the exploration of their gender/political topics, but honestly I've loved them and I think it's really interesting to see how Le Guin was grappling with the ideas in her time.
Some of my favorites from the last few years were "Between Two Fires," (horror/history/fantasy) and "Piranesi" (which maybe you've read, a lot of people have but I'm late lol.) I'm currently reading all of Ursula K Le Guin's scifi like "Left Hand of Darkness" and "Dispossessed."
Don't wanna get ahead of myself but i AM currently at a coffee shop rereading Sakana with my thumbnails book right here beside me. For purposes.

The cover for This Mortal Coil, with art by Jan and Vlad Schwarts. The book is written by Jasmine walls and illustrated by Marie Enger. The cover shows a skeleton wearing a cloak and holding a golden, broken sword, their pose furtive as they tug at their hood. Behind them is a path leading up to a looming and shadowed castle framed by a bright moon and a blood red sky.
We're excited to reveal our newest illustrated novella:

Weโve also got some very cool announcements to go with this cover reveal, but first, what's the story? ๐งตโจ

A cartoon drawing of a fish in water, eating fish flakes that are falling in. An arrow pointing to flakes says "YOUR COMMENTS ON MY LITTLE PICTURES AND STORIES" An arrow pointing to the fish says "GROWING FAT AND HEALTHY" Another arrow pointing to the fish says "ME (ARTIST)"
Gizmo used to do the same thing!!! We'd take him on a trip or something and he was so confused off his schedule when we got back that I had to hand-feed him for at least two or three weeks before he figured it out again.
Just start trying to get stuff on that resume, even if it's personal work for the time being! Studios are used to seeing personal and school projects listed as valid experience.
It's really tough out there in games right now, especially for those trying to break in. I think the best thing they could do would be to start learning and building something for practice? Build a small level in Unreal with free assets from the store. Manage a small project with friends. Etc.
I'm new in the games industry myself: I recently pivoted from comics to 2D concept art. I had a lot of existing artistic knowledge but I still had to take about a year to learn new skills and put together a basic portfolio. My partner also works in games and an opportunity came via her network.
Is your friend interested in art for games? Or some other part of the pipeline (production, qa, programming, engineering, etc.)?
That's from a cool local drag group!
Yeah, I think "start with small expectations" as the hard rule, rather than "start with a small project" is the right answer. I do think it's easier to manage expectations on a smaller project, but if you go into a huge one first thinking it'll just be fun practice you can get MUCH further!
Hole Show is a recurring alt drag show (Oops All Worms was probably March's theme)! It's amazing and also filthy!!
this is the good news I needed
The only time I ever had to think hard on this was when I drew a whole graphic novel about 11 softball players ๐ตโ๐ซ, otherwise I never really think about it unless a character is like writing or something
