Don’t just plant trees, plant forests to restore biodiversity for the future The tree mix matters. Near Chesapeake Bay, scientists have been experimenting with mini-forests for over a decade. The surprising results show how biodiversity pays off.

Many tree-planting commitments have a critical flaw: They rely too heavily on monoculture plantations – vast areas planted with just a single tree species. Plant * forests* with full biodiversity!

Where U.S. science has been hit hardest after Trump’s first year The Trump administration has slashed the number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, with far fewer focused on women, cancer and mental health.

NIH grants mentioning women dropped 31% in 2025, hitting research into conditions like endometriosis and ovarian cancer—fields already underfunded and poorly understood. The decline signals a sharp contraction in attention to women’s health research.

She wears a navy blue sleeveless top and shorts, athletic shoes, and gray socks, with her curly dark hair floating weightlessly. The busy ISS module around her features blue handrails, equipment racks, cables, monitors, and various floating items.

Ocean warming weakens the sea–land breeze in coastal megacities - Nature Climate Change The sea–land breeze acts to counter urban heat in many coastal cities. Here the authors simulate how this circulation changes with warming ocean water, showing that it decreases in most of them, addin...

A new Nature Climate Change study finds global warming is weakening sea breezes in coastal cities by reducing land–sea temperature contrast. Fewer sea breezes mean less natural cooling, worsening heat, pollution buildup, and urban livability risks.

Victoria has made public transport free – NSW hasn’t. Has there been any difference in uptake? Public transport access, travel time and familiarity with the network all play a role in how many people switch away from driving.

Is making public transport free “effective?”

“…the relatively small difference between Victoria and NSW suggests price is not the main constraint on mode shift. Access, travel time, service reliability and the ability to make specific trips appear to matter more.”

Key ocean current is slowing at locations around the Atlantic Measurements by buoys at four latitudes in the western Atlantic provide the strongest evidence yet that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is weakening

Direct buoy measurements across multiple Atlantic latitudes now show the strongest real-world evidence yet that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)—a key climate-regulating current—is weakening, reinforcing concerns that human-driven warming is destabilising a critical Earth system
