More RSS, fewerĀ emails Referencing this post by James post — Newsletters should have web feeds (via Bubbles) — my initial reaction on reading it was to disagree. I like having my newsletters in a separate place, I even have a unique email address I use to subscribe to them, so they land in a different inbox. Then I remembered that two of the three newsletters I read most often — I subscribe to around 10 but some I'm happy to ignore and will delete an issue if I don't have time to catch up — I had found the RSS feeds for and now use them in NetNewsWire, simply because (as James does) I can click through to an article, and use the URL directly in the same app I'm using to read it.

More or less, or something in-between?

Why I Still Like theĀ Internet The determination to move away from the addictive doom-scrolling of social media has given me pause, given me space to look around at how I use the internet and figure out where I get most value and where I WANT to get it from. TLDR; unsurprisingly, it’s connection to people. When social media first appeared it really was about the people using it; admittedly for us early adopters who were already well established online within our own little nichĆ© of semi-similarity minded people — think blogrolls and webrings — the rise of Twitter was exciting and immediate and, hey look, all my favourite online friends are all there too.

More blogs! Yay! But where are they all?

Ternus future Tim Cook is stepping down as CEO, will continue as Exec Chairman. John Ternus steps into CEO role. What does it mean for us Apple fans? No idea. Not for a few years yet at least. Like all most big companies the current products are already in support, future products are on the line being built, and future future products are already being designed. Apple under Ternus? We will properly find out in a few years time. Note to self: you follow to many Apple blogs. 32 posts about this and all saying pretty much the same thing, just in different ways because, after all, they are Apple driven products too. I wonder which of the blogs had something about Cook drafted and ready?

A very MondayĀ Monday I know, it gets a bad press, but I’ve felt very flat, lethargic, and distinctly lacking in motivation today. Plodded on but already looking forward to an early night. Tomorrow is, as always, a new day!

Week 16 šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø Life As predicted, a quiet week. Steady at work, steady at home. Productive in small ways, with a lot of little things moved forwards. Managed to get some exercise in, both at the gym, on Zwift, and a wee walk one evening too (even if I did get dive bombed by a heron). Not long back from a weekend up in Perth — meeting up with family, watching my son and his cousin play together. Restorative fun times. The simple joy of just nipping away for the weekend in the motorhome just confirms what a great buy she was, and Jack loves being away on a ā€˜holiday’ no matter how long for!

Another week, and a lot of article read, two great movies watched, and a lovely weekend just ended.

Braw morning for aĀ cycle A flat one, as we have a 4 year old to keep up with! Weather looking good, which is just as well cos my gears need a tighten I think. Ohh and new pads for the brakes. Possibly a new chain, and cassette? 14 year old bike needs some love.

The rain always sounds heavier on the roof of our motorhome. Last night it built steadily to a constant thrum and, a few minutes later, it stopped instantly.

Like someone has turned off a tap. No lessening, no odd raindrops, from a downpour to zero rain in a second.

Weather is wonderful.

All is quietĀ (ish) Parked up for the night near Perth, motorhome setup and some snacks before bed. Calm and peaceful, just me, Becca, Jack, and Dave (who is already snoring, it’s hard being a dog). This motorhome, Vera, was THE best investment. Much happy.

No more AIĀ images I had good responses to my post the other day and it made me realise that, given my renewed focus here, I should treat it better than I have been. So I'll be trying a couple of plugins over the coming weeks to see which one I like best, all of which will pull from actual images that are available for me to use (Unsplash as one of the best examples). All of this takes me back to the early days of blogging where things changed quickly, you reacted as best you could, and tried to find little ways to improve your site over time.

I love the internet, thoughtful interactions help me rethink things I've skimmed over and, tldr; No more AI Featured Images for my blog.

Cancel that, don’tĀ stockpile I think I’ve fallen victim to an AI blunder, and I’m not sure I’m alone. I use an app called Particle, it collates news from various sources, and has proved reliable over the past few months. You can dial up/down the things you want to read so as a way to manage the horror of the news it’s been a handy way to turn the torrent to stream, as it were. However yesterday they posted a piece about UK government advice to stockpile, due to the current situation with Iran. Particle linked to the Daiy Express, Daily Record, and Wales Online.

Unpile those stocks! Apologies, I was duped, I think?

Apparently… not. I think the tool I use to check the news has been a bit wrong!

Mastodon bad, fediverseĀ meh? Apologies for the slightly, deliberately, click baity title there but honestly, the entire thing just seems a bit.. over wrought? I’ll admit I’m a little behind the curve as I, rightly or wrongly, view the whole fediverse/mastodon thing as geeks being a little too geeky for their own good, it’s all a little too exclusionary if you don’t ā€˜grok’ the language (do we not say that anymore since X use it?), or don’t understand the nuance behind how it all hangs together. Maybe I need to go read a 101 or something.

I am not style On Saturday I found myself in a large department store in Glasgow. I was there to purchase a shirt, possibly two, to get me through the endless round of Christmas nights out, lunches and whatnot that will inevitably start to pile up towards the end of the year. So I was looking for the smart/casual […]

Reasoned nuance Manuel is usually opionated and occasionally correct. I agree that nuance is missing from a lot of discourse on the internet, and it’s a reason I wholly encourage blogs to have comments so enable a little back and forth. As someone who’s never ā€˜gone viral’ and never wrote or posted anything with that in mind, I agree with his take that being reasonable is boring. So whatever you do, don’t read his post/take on vertical browser tabs, it’s far too reasonable to bother with — Nuances

When is AI image slopĀ ok? There is no escaping the galloping rise that AI is seeing across the tech world. It’s spreading out everywhere, not quite like a virus — although I’m sure they are already prowling about out there — more like the exploring tentacles of an inquisitive octopus. I have used, and will continue to use, AI for some things. It’s helped me figure out some logic building Apple Shortcuts — I am not a developer and occasionally get tripped up by my own lack of knowledge, not that AI is flawless in this regard but even used as a sounding board I have found it useful — and I’ve used it for some fun things too.

UK to stockpile PM Starmer has issued stockpile guidance. The short version (without the rhetoric): • A battery or wind-up torch - torches are a safer option than candles. • A portable power bank for charging your mobile phone. • A battery or wind-up radio to stay updated during a power outage. • Spare batteries for torches and radios and a backup battery for any medical equipment you rely on. • A first aid kit (or some first aid supplies) including items such as waterproof plasters, bandages, a thermometer, antiseptic, eyewash solution, sterile dressings and gloves, medical tape for dressings, and tweezers.

Sleep ideas Dreams varying from mundane, to horrifying, from opaque to vivid. Time to get back in the magnesium supplements for me, I think. As ever when I wake through the night, my brain kicks into gear and I ponder projects, come up with ideas, then promptly forget them when I go back to sleep. I’m sure I’ve had some of my best ideas at these times, that are then lost to whims of darkness.

Cadence My work week follows a pattern most of the time. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday are half and half meetings and ā€œdoingā€ time. Friday has fewer meetings. Wednesdays are meeting and deadline days. So I don’t really plan anything other than attending the meetings, and getting the reports done. And I seem to have fallen into a similar cadence with my personal to do list as well — It’s empty! Most unsettling and very unusual. I even checked that it was still working (I use Apple Reminders, I’m sure I’d have heard if it was broken) but it’s working just fine, I just have no tasks planned for today. I am unsettled.

Notch apps areĀ pointless I've been running boringNotch — an app that takes the black 'notch' in my MacBook and aims to make it useful — for a while now. I've tried others but realised why none of them enthuse me.They are trying to solve a problem that shouldn't exist. I've never had a 'notch' before, my brain doesn't treat it like a thing I should care about, my muscle memory doesn't push my cursor up to that area of the screen, so having an app that wants me to enter that area, and will open apps for me (I use Spotlight or the Dock for that), or will let me drop files there (I use Finder for that), feels like forcing usage rather than supporting it.

boringNotch is a nice app, it's just that I don't want to 'go' to that place on my screen...
