The institution’s choice to not require vaccines, much less masks, created an unsafe working environment, especially for the most vulnerable workers in housekeeping and other service areas. This deliberate oversight is especially concerning given that part of the reasoning given to faculty for these choices was that a portion of SMU’s funding comes from the state of Texas. If that is the case, it is not clear to me that SMU would be a safe working environment going forward given the recent bills in the Texas legislature targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as tenure.
