Why this NASA climate scientist wants you to stay angry β€œI don’t think we rebuild science without getting mad.”

I love this interview so much. Basically - the nerds are angry and we're not going away.

Also mentoring early career researchers is extra difficult now, & especially if they are in the US on a visa. There is so much added stress for international researchers.

I recently submitted my 1st first-author paper since 2020. Why the long gap? We had our 2nd child in Aug 2020. In 2023 we moved to another country. In 2024 my son was diagnosed w/ Autism and ADHD. Scientists & academics are people first, & everyone's career looks different.

Moderate global warming does not rule out extreme global climate outcomes - Nature Extreme global climate outcomes may occur even under moderate 2 °C warming and may turn out to be more extreme than model-averaged projections at 3 °C or 4 °C warming.

In a new Nature study, we show that extreme global climate outcomes may occur even under moderate 2Β°C warming for several sectors.

The findings reinforce the urgency of limiting warming well below 2Β°C.

🚨 It’s official: 2026 had the lowest annual maximum Arctic sea ice extent on record - essentially tied with last year’s record low.

Climate change is reshaping the Arctic, and it's all throughout the year.

Trying to understand how forests like this one might recover after disturbances was the motivation for a proposal I recently submitted to the Dept of Energy. 🀞🏼

While it's difficult to attribute a single event to human-caused climate change, we do expect more extreme rainfall from hurricanes, a higher proportion of intense hurricanes, and warmer springs as the climate warms.

What does climate change look like? Hiking through Table Rock Mountain State Park, SC. It experienced record-breaking rainfall during Hurricane Helene in 2024, extensive damage to the forest, and a wildfire in spring 2025, thanks to downed trees and a dry winter/spring (and a careless smoker).

All the best to you, Kate. You and every other scientist working in the federal govt deserve so much better. Glad you are not leaving science, we need you!

Dozens of researchers will move to France from US following high-profile bid to lure talent Large proportion worked at Columbia University, which had its grants cut and frozen by the administration of US President Donald Trump.

There are tens of thousands of scientists working in the US whose funding or careers have been damaged, and dozens of them moving to other countires is...not that many.

"Just move to somewhere else and do science" is not a serious approach here. There aren't anywhere near enough jobs elsewhere.

This is disturbing on many levels, and costs at least $584 million just for the purchase. The conditions in existing DHS facilities are inhumane. Meanwhile science budgets have been slashed in this country, leaving us all more vulnerable to climate change and disease.

Attention folks in the weather, climate, disaster, wildfire, and Earth science communities: NSF has just published a new "Dear Colleague" letter inviting feedback (by Mar 13) on the proposal to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). www.nsf.gov/funding/...

Similar feelings here. It's a mess. I'm grateful for the inspiring group of authors on this report. I think we will persevere.

I'm excited to moderate this discussion tomorrow (register belowπŸ‘‡πŸΌ), which will explore some challenges of AI use in weather and climate applications, including fairness, data democratization, communicating uncertainty, and dealing with data sparse areas or loss of data streams.

It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from OkjΓΆkull to Ok (jΓΆkull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

The IPCC’s First Lead Author Meeting for AR7, is taking place in Paris this week. The French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr Jean-NoΓ«l Barrot welcomed around 600 authors from more than 100 countries to the Quai d’Orsay on Tuesday evening.

@agu.org is in a tricky situation with the federal paramilitaries in New Orleans β€” they can’t make security promises if they aren’t sure they can keep them, and if the state-run convention authority is telling them they can’t bar warrantless agents, they can’t promise to do so.

Great start to the IPCC lead author meeting!
βœ”οΈ Inclusivity was set as a priority for this assessment cycle, we even had a full session on it
πŸŽ† All 3 working groups are together the whole week, it's an exciting opportunity to talk outside discipline boundaries
⏳We have a lot of work to do! Let's go

A climate scientist reflects on 30 years fighting the 'forces of unreason' Thirty years ago, the IPCC agreed on a historic finding: β€œThe balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate.”

This is a poignant reflection to read as I prepare to begin my journey as an IPCC author - thank you Ben Santer for sharing this and for the path that you and others have set for this generation of climate scientists.

Yesterday I was enjoying quiet coastal Georgia with my family, and today I am headed to Paris for the first author meeting for the next #IPCC report. Sadly, the ecosystems we enjoyed, & my inlaws neighborhood, are at risk from rising sea levels if climate change continues unabated.

Can We Count on the Land? Exploring the Uncertainty of Land-based Mitigation Strategies How Earth System Models assess land-based carbon removal (AR, BECCS): carbon-cycle responses, and local climate side-effects; and how Integrated Assessment Models then asses socio-economic constraints that shape decision-ready deployment.

Land-use strategies must account not only for C storage potential, but also for wider impacts on food systems, water resources & ecosystems:πŸ”Žbit.ly/4qMYPEy

Nearly 30 countries refuse to sign a final #COP30 agreement that doesn't include "fossil fuel phase-out," as negotiations head into overtime.
