Hi friends, community members, and supporters: A few days ago, my landlord (Amira Legrand / Keora Legrand) served an eviction holdover notice to me and I was given my first court date. (October 3rd). I am to reappear in court (December 3rd). I have a mutual who l've been doing tenants organizing with who is open to representing me in court. i In the meantime, I am requesting your support. I've been living in my apartment since 2021. Since then, I've been navigating underemployment (and unemployment), ongoing health challenges caused by Long Covid, medical malpractice, gaslighting, and antiBlackness. Despite explaining my circumstances to the landlord that I would be late with paying the rent, she's left no room for compromise and has illegally charged me late fees. I also live with two other roommates, who the the landlord has used to antagonize me in attempts for me to self-evict. Regardless of my willingness to compromise with the landlord, she and my roommates have made efforts to evict me on their own accord. With all this in mind, I am looking to crowdfund the money I owe in rental arrears, and find another apartment. This occurrence does not only speak to me but to ongoing rent crisis most Black and other marginalized tenants in New York City are subjected to. Thank you for your time. This grapefruit tree is 20 years older than me, growing up; I used to pic the fruits with my mom , we would pack them up and send some to my eldest sister –she lives in nearby city— my mom always believed that our grapefruit are super special .
