have a look at the michael taft video on youtube. if you have a bit of meditation exp you might find piti or even the first couple jhanas very accessible given just those instructions (might be even without much experience)

things definitely get interesting once you get up to j7/j8/post 8 and the content of perception (if there is any) becomes extremely subtle

there are one or two good papers characterizing jhanas with eeg/fmri

equanimity is a valuable skill. it can be practiced and improved systematically

pretty much have convinced myself this isn’t the main thing going on, at least for me. haven’t seen a dip below 95%, so if there’s even an effect i think it’s minor

I will put on a continuous pulse oximeter, start recording, traverse the 8 jhanas, open myself up to anything interesting in the post j8 space that may or may not occur (eg cessation), and report back with a graph of my SpO2 during the journey. Oximeter sample rate is 1 sample/sec

but yeah my practice is going great. mostly i do a combo of
- diff kinds of noting+labeling
- jhanas
- “unclinging” exercises where i try to not cling to certain channels or categories of experiences
- “do nothing”
- metta

i found zazen style really challenging when i was learning. my mind was way too clingy and prone to generating friction
