Harlan Ellison is (was 😔) awesome. He bristled at the “fantasy” or “sci-fi” label, cuz it’s def not Tolkien or Dick. But he was amazing. Mephisto in Onyx is one of the best stories I’ve ever read.

I think Mike served his time and has owned being a horrible person in his younger days more openly & honestly than anyone I can think of. He was a product of a life most wouldn’t even survive. As he says, he’s a fighter. He has a kill-or-be-killed mentality. It’s ingrained. Let him live now.
