I actually just had a stroke of inspiration and discovered that TV risers are a thing--basically a little shelf my TV can stand on with just enough space underneath to fit a blu-ray player. Problem solved!

It’s odd. I’ve never had an issues with my Shout Factory or Vinegar Syndrome discs, but several Criterions will freeze around the one hour mark. I’m curious if those have more data on them.

It’s apparently a common issue with the Sony UPB-700. It seems to really struggle with Criterion discs in particular. I’ve been wanting to upgrade to one of the universally recommended Panasonic models, but it’s too big to fit in our TV stand.

For me 4K/blu-ray combo packs seem like the best option for future-proofing my collection for the day I invest in a 4K player that won’t freeze on half the discs I play in it.

I made the last minute decision to go to that show. I broadly like Real Estate, but being there really made me go, “oh yeah, these guys have a bunch of great songs!”
