Great discussions and deep-dives with comic creators.
They're the best!
Hey folks, after nearly 4 years at Mad Cave, I was let go this morning. It was a wonderful time getting to work with an amazing list of creators. If we have worked together, please stay in touch. I am available for freelance editing and would love to work with you all in the future.
Thinking of you, James.
4 days left on the Hallowed Ground campaign with just over $5k to reach our goal 💜 Who doesn't like horror stories about the afterlife? especially when paired with stunning covers like this one from THE @fellhound.bsky.social

As a comic writer who hires artists for my projects, I've had the privilege of looking over comic artist portfolios in person and online.
I thought it might be helpful to share some of what I look for as I go through portfolios in order to help those of you who are newer.
Feeling hopeful and optimistic about the future!
Looking forward to FEED THEM TO THE CROWS #1 from @theothermarioc.com and @jamesfergcomics.com!
Wow. These are amazing! So glad you could enjoy that experience. Here's to more time with the Man of Steel!
Happy Superman Day! As a huge Superman fan, it meant so much to me to get to draw the Man of Steel! 💙☀️

It's not about copying. It's about uncovering the bare bones of what makes a good comic.
Unpacking genre norms, tracking character arcs, and balancing it all with rich world-building requires a lot of reading, analyzing, and, most importantly, listening.
Keep learning about comics. The journey doesn't end when we publish our first story.
It's all about a growth mindset: leaning into the uncomfortable, learning from other comic creators, and strengthening our skills.
Read the comics you want to write. Analyze what's effective. Repeat.
polished cover idea for the competed titan graphic novel. Ansel and Ren are rendered in full color on the bottom, Ansel from the chest up and Ren from the chin up. Ren smiles and looks sidelong at him, holding up a date. Ansel exhales smoke from the lit cigarette he holds in his leg hand, and shoots her a mischievous look. behind them is a collage of cut out photos: a motorcycle, a vintage grain truck, and a modern electric SUV. each one is a solid, monochrome color on top of very high contrast black and white: the bike is orange, the truck is blue, and the SUV is purple, which are all colors taken from the comic itself. scattered about the vehicles are high contrast photo cutouts of spent shell casings and dates. at the top, on top of the SUV, is the title in big white block letters: "the titan"
first serious cover iteration for #TheTitan 👀👀👀
Yeah, those were the days. Totally get what you're saying with Discord, too.
I feel you, Mario. I've moved more over to Discord to meet my needs. Social media can feel overwhelming on a lot of days.
Working on my Story Bible for my next comic!
Then...I'll do my school assignment.
Clearly, I have my priorities right :)
Haha. I love that scene!
@adamwallenta.bsky.social speaks some wisdom here. You are never too old, or young, to do something creative. Catch up on @jimmygaspero.bsky.social's chat with him about his graphic novel Punk Taco. 👇

Cover of Dirt Mountain. Dirt Mountain looms over Suze, as she holds a picture to her chest.
Suze surfs down Dirt Mountain in a shopping cart.
Dirt mountain catches Suze when she falls and holds her in the palm of his hand.
Suze lies on Dirt's hand, saddened that she can't hug her brother.
Happy Portfolio Day!

Writing is connecting lines to dots.
This to that.
Wrapping yarn around pins. Connecting pictures, ideas, and worlds.
Squinting for that ever-important through-line.
Penny and the Yeti is out next week, just before the perfect date of April 25th. I’m really happy whenever anyone that’s read an advanced copy gets this reference.
Comic Writers, what font do you write in? Does a specific font hold more inspiration?
Right now, I'm trying Courier New. Feels like I'm writing a book report in 6th grade.
