A hand holding a postcard of a four-panel comic in a Mary-Worth-esque art style. At the top it says PROVIDENCE in letters that outline bits of the city’s skyline. Byline reads: BY THE MAD PECK, DOC DANIELS, I.C.LOTZ, & THE FRONT PORCH

Panel 1: “PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND. WHERE IT RAINS TWO DAYS OUT OF THREE EXCEPT DURING THE RAINY SEASON WHEN IT SNOWS LIKE A BITCH” A woman in a vampy dress runs through the rain. Offpanel, someone says “A MESS, AIN'T IT?”

Panel 2: “AND FRIENDSHIP IS A ONE WAY STREET” Two cars crash in front of a street sign that reads Friendship and One Way

Panel 3: “RICH FOLKS LIVE ON POWER STREET.” Three obviously rich women lounge in a room; it’s raining outside

Panel 4: “BUT MOST OF US LIVE OFF HOPE.” Two couples, dressed in more working-class clothes, dance in front of a phonograph

I just learned that the artist behind this iconic comic, a copy of which hung in my apartments off Hope for a decade and still hangs in my faraway house today, died in March.

Godspeed.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

How the cavefish lost its eyes — again and again Mexican tetras that got swept into pitch-black caverns had no use for the energetically costly organs. They lost their eyes in multiple ways — and gained some nifty traits too.

Friday afternoon after a long week: cave-dwelling lifestyle sounding appealing? Dr. Misty Riddle interview may be of interest!

‘It’s a nightmare.’ U.S. funding cuts threaten academic science jobs at all levels “There is a lot of pressure to essentially leave the country or not pursue research,” one Ph.D. student says

I can't stress enough how close U.S. science is to the cliff.

"Numbers released in May by the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicate that if Congress approves the cuts to the agency proposed by the White House, the number of early-career researchers it supports could fall by 78%" (@science.org)

The Gutting of America’s Medical Research: Here Is Every Canceled or Delayed N.I.H. Grant Some cuts have been starkly visible, but the country’s medical grant-making machinery has also radically transformed outside the public eye.

"Tanner, a chemist at the Univ. of Mississippi working to develop a novel approach for treating glioblastoma, was notified in April that the grant was terminated.

“I would like to cure brain cancer,” Dr. Tanner said. “I think that's not particularly controversial.”
