Have you tried using the Merlin bird app? It gives real-time info about the birds it's "hearing." I've used it as an extra pair of ears myself.

This is such a thoughtful offer! I have several photography talks and I love sharing with nature clubs and events. Things like wildlife/bird photography, visual storytelling, nature photography with your phone. Happy to connect if you need more info.
Thank you for this! I'm a photographer & instructor, and I've created a live, online Wildlife Photography course. I'm just trying to spread some joy -- and connection to nature, which does us all good! Novices and long-time shooters welcome. Details at www.jessicarix.com/learn-wildli...
Thank you! And there's not quite as much luck as it might seem. ๐ I find lots of "lucky shots" through observation and ethical practices that let an animal be comfortable enough to give me moments like these. But I'm grateful for every single one of them.
๐ March 1 & 2
๐ค Live, online sessions (with breaks, I promise!)
โจ Early Bird Registration ends Saturday, Feb 15 ($295)
๐ธ First 10 registrants will get a free photo critique
A chipmunk reaches in from the top-right corner, the tips of its outstretched left paw almost touching three bright red berries. The chipmunk is on the end of a thin branch, surrounded by leaves -- only the face and left arm of the chipmunk can be seen. The background is a soft, blurred, mottled green. Photo taken by Jessica Rix. (WACC: wild)
Stretch yourself and reach for what you love.

A photo of a black-necked stilt standing in calm water with a single drop of water on its beak. Above the photo are the words "Wildlife Photography Weekend." In the negative space of the photo are the words "March 1 & 2. Live, online sessions. $295 Early Bird Registration." Wild/Attracted/Controlled/Captive? *Wild*
I taught at a photo school for years but it closed last summer and I miss sharing my love of wildlife photography with people. So, I built a course for anyone and everyone who wants to learn how to make wildlife photography less challenging and more joyful. jessicarix.com/learn-wildlife-photography/
I'm generally a hopeful and optimistic person, but I had a down moment today. And then this poem practically wrote itself:
Shades of gray
or golden mean
die in darkened cruelty.
How much good
and how much green
is destined now to go unseen?
Yes!! So cool!
May I request to be added? I'm not a prolific poster but I'm passionate about ethical wildlife photography and advocate for ethical practices (in field and in sharing), and I would love to be included.
Beautiful. It reminds me of a lovely, flowy sea creature. The joy of abstract-adjacent photos!
Great editorial / storytelling photography! (even if that second one breaks my heart a bit)
If creating or doing something new has you feeling vulnerable and grasping for confidence, I have some good news: 1) That's totally normal. 2) That doesn't mean you can't do it, it just means you have to act in spite of it.
So don't talk yourself out of action; be brave and do something anyway.
Photos and/or links to creations are welcome! :)

What's your favorite thing you've ever created? (And if "favorite" is impossible, what's one you just really, really love?) It could be anything: a piece of art, a food dish, a photo, a story, a song, a presentation, a project, a program, a whole organization... we all create in different ways!
Gorgeous shot! (And I'm a wildlife photographer, if you care to follow.)
Thank you!

I just joined (transplant from Instagram) but I'd love to be included!
Please go follow The Awkward Yeti and discover the wonderful characters (Heart and Brain are my faves). These comics have been bright spots for me on Instagram for years. I hope the Bluesky community embraces them, too!
I include a "wacc" label on all of my photos. It stands for wild / attracted / controlled / captive and helps provide context about when and where the animal was photographed. It's a simple way to be a transparent, ethical photographer. Learn more: www.jessicarix.com/wacc/
A photograph of an arc of water created by the tail of a diving duck. The background is solid black. From left to right, there is a thin blue, curved shape, almost like a flat feather. Near the right edge of that shape, there is an arc of bright water droplets, which are reflected in the dark water below. Photograph by Jessica Rix. #wacc:wild
One of my favorite wildlife photos I've ever taken. When I teach wildlife photography, this is the example that brings it all together: be a naturalist first, photographer second. That's usually when you find the magic moments. (wacc:wild)

If you have an idea that brings beauty or knowledge or kindness into the world, do it. The world needs it. But *you* need it, too. You deserve to breathe life into beauty and growth and kindness. You deserve to take action on the things that matter to you. You deserve to feel hope. Especially now.
I'm so happy you're on Bluesky! I just joined and you were one of the first accounts I searched for. Thank you for creating and sharing Heart and Brain and all the rest of the gang.
Hi Bluesky! Just joining and glad to be here. I work with new and aspiring artists, educators, and genuinely kind people who want to use their ideas and passions to make the world a little better. Looking forward to connecting with more of those folks here.
