The tiny local museum in my home village asked me to do a talk for 40 people, and the stagefright is 🤯🤯!!!

Lecture on research methods to 250 x high fee paying international students? No problem. 💅

Lecture to 40 chilled local history enthusiasts on home turf 🥶😱

Help!

Just a few paragraphs in, and this is already excellent:

"I tried to get out of the conversation as quickly as I could, not least because he seemed frustrated that I didn’t see things exactly as he did — a new behavior and likely a symptom of LLM overuse."

Critical Atlantic current significantly more likely to collapse than thought Scientists say finding is ‘very concerning’ as collapse would be catastrophic for Europe, Africa and the Americas

This should be a bigger story.

Scientists are more concerned than ever that a critical current will collapse soon and wreak havoc on North America and Europe.

What keeps coming up again and again is the risk of AI is really the flattening and erasure of plural forms of knowledge and capability with one way of doing things. To appropriate the Zapatista slogan, we need a world where many worlds not only fit but thrive and flourish

Ideally including the used oily pans that your family members put in there to be 'out of the way' while serving up in your small kitchen.

Before AI agents act for us, we need to know how AI searches for us - LSE Impact Generative AI agents are pitched as being a new gateway to engaging with the Internet, but the way AI sees the Internet is both "conservative" and "stubborn”.

Once you account for the fact that grammar school intake is self-selected for (a type of) academic success, their results are unimpressive as well. Which means their function is even more obviously akin to a minor public school, allowing people to educate their kids alongside the “right sort”.

Person spec - that is what we shortlist against at LSE. However, keep crowdsourcing views as I don't know about norms and actual practice elsewhere.

Last week was an absolute nightmare for Lebanon, with more 300 people killed on Wednesday. More than 2000 people have been killed since March 2nd alone... If you like hip hop/music and are looking for ways to support the displaced and dispossessed in Lebanon, checkout this thread. Spread the word.

HIGHLY recommend this to anyone wanting to expand their critical understanding of epistemic injustice. I attended a preview lecture by Zara and learned so much, got great reading recs, sparkly patter, and a new framework!
10/10 would recommend ❤️

So much of my career I have been arguing for the value of *thinking*, using and cultivating our expertise rather than outsourcing responsibility to e.g. systematic reviews or checklists for qualitative research or an "evidence base". Yes LLMs are another way of surrendering thinking.

Blackthorn (sloe) flowers in the chiltern hills on a sunny Easter Monday. Love the way they turn spiky branches into something fluffy-looking

As a way to spread the word about the various Lebanese mutual aids that support all those affected by the ongoing Israeli war and occupation of Lebanon, I thought I'd share a bunch of contemporary Levantine musicians who are popular among my Beirut peeps, a thread 🧵
