As a lone wolf --a freelancer or self-employed artist with only domestic overhead-- it's certainly possible to make a living, sometimes a good one. Bands and other very small collectives can do okay if they are savvy and plug all their leaks. A viable business in the arts? Basically doesn't exist.

The major problem with booking agencies is they have no incentive to make deals efficient or transparent. They get a percentage of what the band gets paid, and cannot care about anything else on the page. If inefficient shadiness gets the band an extra grand, they get an extra $150 and that's great.

Being on my own all the time I start up silly habits to amuse myself. So when I drop something or stub my toe, I yell “SPACE!” Like the way Thomas Dolby yells “SCIENCE!” When I set something down without paying attention and it falls or something I balanced on something else falls, I yell “GRAVITY!”
