Authors and number of books I’ve read on StoryGraph showing relative popularity.
@drjamesbailey.bsky.social proof that I love Muriel Spark^ *
^(PS the EMForster popularity — you can see it was a difficult part of my life)
*(according to the dreadful Goodreads and then Story Graph)
**(I hate those apps/platforms especially Goodreads)

Shop with a sign saying ‘sweet shop’, which is part of a little street in Barbra Streisand’s basement
Antique shop in Barbra Streisand’s basement
I’m once again thinking about how Barbra Streisand saw fit to install an entire DICKENSIAN STREET, including several fully-staffed ‘shops’, in the basement of her house, to show off her favourite antiques.

Yes, it was only two days ago that Bezos’s wife was telling us she has every right to be happy. Sure, Jan.

These look wonderful and working with the IWM supervisory team is a dream. Do encourage your MA students to apply (and also look out for opportunities to set up CDPs in the next round!)

And just to add to this, the constant event volatility — Brexit, electoral chaos, Truss, Covid, Ukraine, Iran etc etc. It’s not at all surprising people are feeling insecure.

James Butler · Am I perhaps in Italy? Cultures of Homosexuality
For all its various forms of sophistication, the ultimate motive of gay history is often a search for people like us,...
‘Our own desire can strike us as alien and predictable by turn, make us seem fools or madmen, even to ourselves. Its hybrid character, our own and not our own, accounts for some of its fascination.’
@piercepenniless.bsky.social on gay history and its uses.

Trump’s Deranged, One-Way Feud With Pope Leo
He’s finally met someone he can’t bully.
In the wake of the Iran war, Trump’s approval rating among Catholics is below 50 percent. Maybe a papal visit to the US could get even more of them to reconsider his presidency.

Like a Cat Loves a Bird by Dr James Bailey
Muriel Spark fans (or just fans of great writing) if you haven’t got your copy of @drjamesbailey.bsky.social ‘s latest book “Like a Cat Loves a Bird: The Nine Lives of Muriel Spark” you’re really missing out on a great book! I’ve been up at an obscene hour relishing the book!

So you wait almost two decades for a good biography of Muriel Spark and then two arrive at nearly the same time. Last year’s Electric Spark by Frances Wilson was excellent. This year’s Like a Cat Loves a Bird by @drjamesbailey.bsky.social is perhaps even better. 1/2
