This is the good part of democracy. It self destructs. Once your electorate stops making good, informed decisions it almost always results in a failed state. Lots of pain and destruction follows. Then the rebuilding starts.

Application design pre-2024: Guys, we should design our app so that our users are able to perform tasks with less than 3 mouse clicks…

Application design post-2024: Here is a textbox, write a 100 word essay and convince our AI to perform those 3 clicks for you.

Experiencing free and open source projects like HomeAssistant and Immich take off and absolutely crush any commercial offering out there in terms of quality, usability and privacy was not just a technical achievement, it literally restored my faith in humanity and the future of computing.

This is a serious problem. I am already seeing people misuse ARIA props, and treat them like SEO for LLMs without thinking about accessibility at all.

At the very least, don’t leave the room like it was hit by a tornado.

Same here. 2024 was the last straw for me. Took me almost 6 months, but I moved pretty much everything from google to either self-hosted or a competitor. Never looked back and happier now. ProtonMail + Synology Docs + Immich + Invidious + DuckDuckGo works amazingly well for me.

Amazon must be getting desperate. You know something isn’t right, when a company famous for making shopping as frictionless as humanly possible is pushing this stupid Rufus thing on every product page, which you can’t opt-out and have to manually close the chat modal manually on every page load.

Historians will call this era ”the decade of mediocrity“. No grand aspirations, no groundbreaking creativity. We are not creating any new value, but we are viciously extracting the value we built up in the past 50 years. It is a game of musical chairs, and we are running out of chairs.

Same with aria-live=“off”. I don’t think even AT/Browser developers bothered to read the spec for it 😁

@nerd4cities.bsky.social @roadguyrob.bsky.social I present you the most pedestrian hostile intersection I have ever seen. Cars can’t see you crossing, you can’t see incoming traffic either. Weird suspended lights. How is this even up to code? (Pleasanton, CA)

Every line of code you wrote, every pixel you designed, every meeting, every roadmap… They will be obsolete, forgotten or deleted in five years. Stop breaking people’s hearts over these, it is not worth it.

I did the same. My work computer is still a Mac, but I switched to LinuxMint at home and haven’t looked back. I gave up on Adobe, AutoDesk or anything from MS a long time ago, so the switch was relatively easy.

Pandora. I rarely need to play a specific song, and Pandora is somehow still miles ahead of Spotify when it comes to generating playlists (stations). I use Emby to stream media from my NAS. Invidious to stream Youtube.

@vivaldi.com How do I disable the editable tab titles? It is driving me nuts and I cannot find a way to disable it. Every time I try to switch tabs it enters edit mode.

7. Linux Mint: Ubuntu based Linux distribution with an excellent UI. This is the best looking and intuitive desktop experience amongst the distros I have tried recently. Looks and feels great righth out of the box.

6. HomeAssistant: This one needs no introduction. A little hard to setup, has some quirks, not the most intuitive UI and there is definitely some learning curve, but undeniably the best home automation solution out there. Incredible ecosystem and community.

5: Immich. I have been looking for a self hosted google photos alternative for a while and holy shit, I finally found it. Fantastic UI, great AI search, just perfect. Seriously, software like this keeps my faith in humanity alive.

Liquid Glass is Apple’s Windows ME moment. It is Windows Aero but somehow they made it worse. I am still in disbelief that they actually released this usability and accessibility nightmare.

Vivaldi statement with heading 'We refuse to reduce you to a passive spectator.' Full text: 'Browsing should push you to explore, chase ideas, and make your own decisions. It should light up your brain. When an artificial assistant sits between you and the web, Big Tech filters what you see and decides what you don't see. Your judgment is outsourced. A browser that browses for you is like paying a robot to go out for dinner with your friends and give you a summary of the evening when it gets home. Vivaldi is taking a stand. We choose humans over hype, and we will not turn the joy of exploring into inactive spectatorship. Without exploration, the web becomes far less interesting. Our curiosity loses oxygen and the diversity of the web dies. We exist for you to explore the web on your own terms. We refuse to reduce you to a passive spectator. We're fighting for a better web where you're in control.' Signed by Jon von Tetzchner, CEO and Co-founder, with Vivaldi logo.
