yeah exactly. idk I think (or, at least, hope) it's not just a distaste for the way it looks but more of a distaste for a rendering pass that fundamentally alters important artistic decisions like facial features, contrast and texture without granular control

it's not just that it looks icky it's that it fundamentally changes the way the image looks aesthetically. dlss and fsr are fine-ish because the way they change the image is very limited and easy to understand (low res -> high res) even if some artifacts are annoying

I think it's a way to go about it but tbh I'm always skeptical when people do it by buying a second hand iPod (which has always been a status symbol, and is nevertheless part of a whole Brand Identity) rather than like, buying some mp3s on bandcamp or recomissioning a second hand android phone

that's fair. I probably *could* opt-out but, for example, if i opted out of whatsapp i'd talk to my mom less frequently, not be able to communicate with my job, and have a lot more difficulty coordinating projects with my classmates & professors. it's not impossible, but it isnt really that possible

people are very much longing for the og iPhone. look at any retrospective coverage of it from any tech publication and you'll find people praising its simplicity and clarity of purpose

funny you say that cause those + an e reader are my favourite gadgets to carry around day to day. I think that's a great way to go about navigating our relationship with technology, my problem with stuff like iPods is the ideological construction of a "golden age" when iPods were pretty corrupt too

i still think that's not a very productive way to look at it, it's still fundamentally conservative imo. looking at the past as something we should return to has historically never really been a good idea, even when the past was indeed better, our future needs to iterative. we can still control tech

My job forces me to use WhatsApp, GSuite, and some other bs. when it isnt my job, it's my education, my friends or family. opting out is unfortunately not fully possible, hence "find a way to make this work"
