End of Term Web Archive – Preserving the Transition of a Nation | Internet Archive Blogs
The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository.
(The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

Also, based on what I've heard from journalists/editors, many incumbents have dedicated editors trying to wash incumbent's hands by choosing rosey-tinted sources, etc. This is specially hard now that people are editing open platforms less than they were a decade ago.

Decentralizing it was already solved years ago. What the open knowledge movement needs is more contributors. Keep editing.

At some point they’re going to go after Wikipedia and the Wayback Machine. More decentralised global efforts needed.

They want you to think Community Notes has all the integrity of Wikipedia, but with none of the governance structures that make Wikipedia what it is.
To mangle a reference, if they wanted Wikipedia, they would have invented Wikipedia.

We're apparently talking about automatic follow-backs again, because some people simply can't imagine social media as anything other than a chain email

I think I may have just signed my first ever fiction contract (for an anthology) which contained a long anti-A.I. clause.
(Meaning: I promised I didn't use A.I. to write my story, they promised not to use my story to train A.I., etc.)

A two panel comic strip.
Panel 1: A light gray human shape (like a thicc stick figure) labelled "THE WEALTHY ELITE" reaches greedily, mouth open in excitement, towards a large floating yellow ball that is labelled "A SECOND GILDED AGE"
Panel 2: same as above, but behind the gray figure (who now has a sweat drop to indicate nervousness on its head) is a VERY large pink blob labelled "THE RETURN OF OUTLAW FOLL HEROES" with one arm wrapped around the gray figure, expression quietly threatening
Please tell me who first posted this so I can properly credit, bc it made me laugh hard this morning

A voting feature similar to Slashdot (higher-rated individuals provide context as votes) could work. But we also need moderation lists to have an actual impact—permabanning accounts repeatedly found to be scams/fake media, etc.
