The cease-fire in the middle east is welcome news, but caution is advisable. It's very fragile. What's clear, however, is that the U.S. hasn't accomplished any of its key goals. Why did Trump mishandle this so badly? I try to explain. (GIFT LINK):

🧵 Happy Monday!
My colleagues did some fantastic work last week and our team produced great pieces on some under-covered aspects of the Iran war @foreignpolicy.com

I just saw dozens of European diplomats heave a collective sigh of relief in Munich: U.S. Sec State Marco Rubio’s speech was much more conciliatory than Vance’s last year. But was it actually “a similar message, nicer tone”, as one leader told me?

I’m still gobsmacked
Davos turned out to be a tale of two speeches: Trump’s rambling and bullying of his country’s closest allies, in sharp contrast with Carney’s eloquent exposition of the dangers of a world where might makes right, writes FP’s @ravireports.bsky.social.
FP’s @ravireports.bsky.social provides some much-needed context for how to think about the biggest unanswered questions surrounding Trump’s plans in Venezuela.

What new precedents have been set here? What will the world do or say now if, say, Putin captures and extradites Ukraine’s Zelensky, or if a dictator somewhere launches a special operation to defend against “narco terrorism”? What exactly are the rules and who is enforcing them?
I can’t imagine anyone in the region will shed tears for Maduro himself but the operation raises several worrying questions. What happens next in Caracas? Who takes over? Will there be more violence? Will the next leader have legitimacy? Should Trump have consulted Congress?
A dramatic start to 2026. In the early hours of Saturday, Donald Trump announced U.S. forces had struck Caracas and captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Great interview with @ravireports.bsky.social on MSNBC, describing the US abdication of clean energy leadership, & China's & others' massive accomplishments on solar, who will gladly lead as we fall behind. Fossil fuel investments are destructive & dumb, blind to a future that's actually here now.

If you want to have a good think about an issue that underpins what every policymaker has to navigate, try this essay by Clark in our latest print magazine. You may well disagree with him, as many people I know do, but you won't regret the prod to mull this topic.
What are the tent poles of national and personal ambition? Is his POV mostly a European one, or is it shared by people in Asia and Africa?
The comfort that constant growth and development would solve the world's problems has turned out to be false, he argues. Capitalism is losing its charisma and growth has proven to be "ecologically disastrous," he writes. So ... what is there to aspire to?
I've always wanted to entice Christopher Clark to write for Foreign Policy. And here it is. The author of "The Sleepwalkers", the great study of World War I, explores the present day and how "modernity is disintegrating before our eyes."
