being able to sit patiently with other people's thoughts, sit patiently with your own, and make both of those processes legible to someone who is not you is very valuable. if you can find a new way to do this that is fantastic news but I suspect it will at least resemble the model we've inherited

more seriously: both an adult life spent teaching and an adult life spent on message boards and sites like this one have underscored to me that reading and communicating about reading is very much not a trivial skill. the recent tech developments further underscore this for me

I hope this forces some soul-searching inside the labor movement. UFW is an extreme case, but the reality is that the relationship between leadership and organizers in other unions is ripe for abuse and domination in the hands of the wrong leadership or the absence of internal accountability.

You know what? Fine, tech bros. You win. You get to do algorithmic pricing.

But in return, we get to do algorithmic taxing on everyone with a net-worth over $5million. As a little treat.

Let me just say that having been there, the idea of being a Black woman in labor in America and having to go before a judge is terrorism.

With Washington Post Local diminished, other news sites step up their D.C. coverage The 51st, City Cast, and The Baltimore Banner are among the outlets to announce expansions of Washington, D.C. metro area coverage since the Post layoffs.

@51st.news should feel as if it belongs to the city and its readers, not to its journalists,' our president @abigailhiggins.bsky.social told @niemanlab.org re: our efforts to hire more journalists after the Washington Post layoffs.

^Those #️⃣s show it does!

The Washington Post Is Using Reader Data to Set Subscription Prices. How Does That Work? - Washingtonian If recent events have not compelled you to cancel your Washington Post subscription, then you might have been in for sticker shock at the dawn of your latest billing cycle. Many Washington Post readers have been notified via email that their subscription rates are set to increase. Nestled at the bottom of these emails, you’ll find an asterisk and the following: “This price was set by an algorithm using your personal data.”

one last pitch I'll make; I would strongly make a case for indie outlets, especially ones run by their workers rather than rich owners: @defector.com @hellgatenyc.com @404media.co are all worker-owned outlets putting out first rate reporting (that you should support!)

Trump-aligned oligarchs are gobbling up media outlets Trump-aligned oligarchs are gobbling up media outlets

we live in an era where the most powerful people in the world are not content to buy total personal impunity, not just content to buy the politicians whose job it is to constrain them, but want to buy our very ability to perceive that those things are happening

How Jeff Bezos Brought Down the Washington Post The Amazon founder bought the paper to save it. Instead, with a mass layoff, he’s forced it into severe decline.

clearly biased as a Wife Guy ( @abigailhiggins.bsky.social is a founding member!), and a lefty. but also biased as a DC resident who watched one of world's richest buy the city's biggest paper, enjoy news cycles about him "saving" it, and then feed it to the wolves
