I genuinely do not understand management's refusal to agree to basic protections, like that they won't replace us with AI. It's baffling. Makes no sense. We're on strike to show management how serious we are about this, and how eager we are to get a contract done!

Screenshot of the following headline and subhed: McClatchy Journalists Revolt Against AI: ‘It’s a Betrayal’ | Exclusive Sacramento Bee staffers refuse bylines over a new AI tool as colleagues at the Miami Herald and Charlotte Observer harbor concerns
Unionized journalists at the Sacramento Bee stand united against McClatchy’s latest AI “articles” initiative. We have withheld our bylines from these stories because we do not want the public to think this is being done in our name — it’s not. We think it’s disgusting.
Real reporters are the ones doing the work. So why is Tony spending all the money we generate on AI?

Tony's executive team is asking us to produce 20-50% more work, but won't provide annual raises consistent with inflation. We lose money the longer we work here. While Tony serves on the United Way board, the very same organization suggests 75% of his PNW reporters earn less than a stable income.
We know we won't soon afford homes like Tony's million-dollar mansion. But working at McClatchy shouldn't mean we'll never afford any home. We should be able to save money, to pay off our student loans, to live our lives without the fear of a single unexpected bill disrupting our ability to survive.
We aren't asking for unreasonable pay — we just want enough to live in the markets we work in. When your subscription price goes up, that money isn't going to news staff, it's lining executive staff pockets.
Without reporters, photographers and other newsroom staff, McClatchy CEO Tony Hunter wouldn't have millions of dollars to spend on AI.

McClatchy reporters have struggled to afford groceries, weddings & plane tickets to see family. As more McClatchy reporters feel forced out of the industry, this has also affected the quality of journalism in their communities.

You deserve reliable information. McClatchy is making that harder by underpaying journalists. Learn about our fight to make things better for both reporters and our communities. More information is available at the link in our bio.
For #employeeappreciationday, McClatchy graciously offered its employees the opportunity to spend what little wages they get on overpriced merchandise.
You know what would make us feel actually appreciated? A livable wage. McClatchy should offer us one.
“If Jeff Bezos no longer supports that mission, then The Post and its readers deserve a steward who does.”
That’s something the entire NewsGuild-CWA stands behind.

McClatchy wants you to invest in a Sacramento Bee subscription, but the company doesn’t want to invest in its reporters.
Under management’s latest offer, seven local journalists would still make salaries low enough to qualify them for low-income housing.
AI has a place.
Publishing misinformation and calling it local news ain’t it.

Newspaper conglomerate McClatchy—the hedge fund-owned publisher that owns local outlets across the country—wants to *aggressively* implement A.I. into its newsrooms, w/proposals that have stunned the union.

Reporters can do what AI can’t.
But McClatchy Media refuses to agree to ethical guidelines on its AI usage. With your support, we can ensure your local news is done by local reporters like these.

Media conglomerate that has overseen the steady erosion of local news in the PNW now wants the ability to hand the whole operation over to AI. Insane.
See our press release outlining our demands that McClatchy Media has refused.
We need your help getting the word out. Share this post, tell us how you feel about AI in your local news, and follow us for more updates.

Six months into negotiations, McClatchy Media is continuing to push back against common sense limits on AI in news. If we don't ensure AI ethics are put in place now, it will soon be too late. If reporters don't fight for transparency for our readers, no one will.
A neutral arbiter agrees: @politico.com violated our contract and its own journalistic standards when it deployed AI.
Our readers deserve news, not slop!
