Another caveat of this feeling like an anime mono culture.Where "If you like anime, you must like all anime" that was available.

I argue it wasn't till Pokemon blew up that anime fans became more selective. "Ranma fans, DBZ fans, and etc"

Yeah, lawless VHS era was kinda a pick and choose with anime OVAs and shows. Bubblegum Crisis if I remember caught on primarily because of how appealing it was to Americans.

Same reason why Fantasy shows like DBZ and Sailor Moon caught on. Not helped brought upon the "Japan Weird" stigma
