A huge thank you to members of the lab, Tokiko, Shin-Yu and Kenny, and our collaborators Drs Mark Bedford and Xiadong Cheng, at @mdanderson.bsky.social and our awesome editor @ebardot.bsky.social and the reviewers!
Congratulations to Nick Newkirk, an amazing graduate student from the lab, on the latest story that supports a model in which helicase-domain methylation and Dicer phosphorylation act together to regulate Dicer conformation and effector recruitment.

Those of us doing research related to women’s health have been hit particularly hard by the govt’s sabotage of the NIH. I spoke to WaPo for this piece, as painful as it was to discuss the reality my lab is facing. www.washingtonpost.com/science/2026...
American science is shrinking.
A Post analysis found that, halfway through this fiscal year, the number of competitive grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health is down by more than half compared with the same period last year. https://wapo.st/3OgoHKV
Oh my god. I am so so sorry to hear this. Ellen will be missed.
I'm excited to tell you about the most recent preprint in my lab, demonstrating that a conserved spindle matrix protein, NPP-21/TPR, is required for the stronger checkpoint in germline cells during embryogenesis in C. elegans
How cool, Needhi!!! We very much look forward to reading this. Congratulations to you and the whole team!!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Can you help us find guests for the Night Science Podcast? We received generous sponsorship from Research Theory and they're challenging us to host 5 scientists each working in flight, genomics, nuclear power, computing & space. Ideas?

“We’ve lost out on the ability to continue to improve this work to make it more effective, and to explore how to apply it to other areas…There are a lot of different ways that genetics has been used to justify prejudice and…that human-made social categories interface with biological categories“🧪
PhD students and Postdocs: The Night Science Podcast (@nightsciencepod.bsky.social) is producing an episode highlighting young scientists talking about their creative process. DM me if you'd like us to consider you for this, & read below what PhD student Davis Garner will contribute! ⬇️
If you know a graduating undergraduate looking for the chance to spend 1-2 years in a lab before graduate school, we're hiring! Our lab explores morphogenesis, defining how the cell adhesion & cytoskeletal machinery work together to allow cells to change shape & move tarheels.live/peiferlab/ 1/n RT
Congratulations to the legendary scientist Judith Kimble!!!
We stand on the shoulders of giants.

My main gripe with the alphafold example is how it shows you need decades and decades of high quality data, well structured, open and accessible to train a model -- and yet they always gloss over it and pretend it's just AI and magic. No, we need to continuously invest in real data and FAIR data.
A unique opportunity to lead the most wonderful company in scientific publishing (I might be slightly biased here). The Company of Biologists are searching for a CEO.

Don’t forget to submit your abstract for the C. elegans topic meeting June 10-14 in Madison, WI. Oral abstract deadline April 3rd! uwmadison.eventsair.com/mapsdev26/
Representative immunostaining of anti-glutamylated tubulin (rMAb-GT335) in C. elegans hermaphrodites. Glutamylated tubulin is detected in labial and cephalic cilia (bracket) and the middle segments (MS) of amphid channel cilia. Scale bar=2μm.
Recombinant monoclonal antibodies to detect tubulin post-translational modifications work beautifully in #celegans neurons and cilia.
@kjverhey1.bsky.social shared ONE ML of each rMAb!

Oh no!!!! Hang on tight Crystal, and don’t let go. Enjoy the restorative break.
Wow!!! You all rock!! Congratulations!!!!! 🍾
Happy belated birthday @needhibhalla.bsky.social !!! Hugs, and cheers!
Let me post a spicy take here: most people don't read or cite other model organisms' work. Because of this, they keep rediscovering things and, most importantly, re-writing the timeline in favor of fewer and fewer models. That, plus an artificial limit of citations per paper equals this 🧪
Awesome!!! Cheers!!!!!! 🥂
Science is not just data, its community! my last activity as Drosophila Board President was to write a theme song for our fly field. it was soooo awesome to rock it with @tarafinegan.bsky.social and ~1000 fly fanciers at #Dros26! 🪰

@statnews.com conducted a national survey of NIH-funded researchers and found that, a year after Trump's return, many scientists are reeling, with some closing labs entirely. ‘This is like the Titanic,' one respondent told me. For full details, see our special report
