#AmericaNeedsBikeLanes

The current administration is seeking to remove #bikelanes on federal land. This could have a chilling effect that trickles down to places like Kansas City. (1/3)

Hands down the best analysis of AI I have read so far. Gets slightly technical in some parts, but for the most part is understandable for non-technical readers.

Yesterday, Kansas City eliminated outdated minimum parking requirements across much of the city. The old rules drove up construction costs, kept storefronts empty, and made it harder to build affordable housing. This is how we build a more walkable, more affordable Kansas City.

Kansas City is providing several community open house opportunities to discuss the future of bikeways and trails! There will be three public engagement opportunities: one in South Kansas City, one in Central Kansas City, and one in North Kansas City. This project aims to understand community preferences related to bikeways, mobility lanes, and trails in Kansas City.
At the open house, residents can help the project team understand strengths and weaknesses in the current system, identify gaps in the system, and understand what current routes need improvement. This is an in-person, open house style public meeting for the community to view data and provide comments on existing conditions. No formal presentations will be made. Please attend the meeting any time during the advertised hours. Verbal and written public comments will be taken during the meeting and considered as the project develops

a graph of ridership on the KC streetcar

Ridership on the Kansas City streetcar is also up 290% compared to this time last year after the opening of the main street extension to UMKC!

The system now has more ridership than the New Orleans streetcars, and is set to be extended to the riverfront this year.

Wild this story didn't compare highway vs rail funding directly and just gave it 10 seconds of lip service

Looking west down 19th Street at Walnut Street in Kansas City. The road is partially milled on the south side to about a few feet from the center line. Orange cones are placed near the edge.

Looks about the width of a cycletrack, hopefully this is phase 2 of the 19th/SW Blvd road diet! This will connect Gillham to SW Blvd.

#KCMO friends: Remember to vote YES on Question 1 on or before April 7th!

The Earnings Tax plays a critical role in funding our municipal services. It is imperative that we renew it.

Make a plan and go vote!

Walking is also really important exercise (as we've been reminded by every device having step tracking built in for the past 15 years). Having it be a natural part of daily life is way easier than forcing yourself to get out and walk a mile!

Kansas City hopes to spur new growth by loosening parking requirements For decades, Kansas City has made it mandatory to provide a minimum amount of parking. Planners and advocates say that has helped hollow out the urban core.

Brookside. 39th Street. River Market. 18th and Vine. Westport. All of these neighborhoods — largely built before 1950 — would be illegal to build under today’s zoning laws. Soon, the Kansas City Council may consider legislation that aims to change those regulations.

Kansas City saw traffic deaths drop by 30% in 2025. Its effort to make roads safer is working For the last five years, Kansas City has been transforming street infrastructure and redesigning roads through the Vision Zero program. Advocates applaud the progress, but want to see even more money dedicated to underserved neighborhoods.

Is that the thread with the picture of a wreck and the unfounded assumption that the bike lane was what caused the crash? As if it wasn't someone speeding, distracted, or drunk driving.

To be fair, a third of that walk is across the gigantic parking lots since those stores have no streetfront presence.

I wish they'd improve the walking experience at least. Taken the streetcar several times now to Costco and walking from the stop is not great. Seeing how they also treat bikes as an afterthought, I'm not very optimistic. Costco is allegedly progressive, wonder if they'd consider any of these ideas?

🧵 KC advocates and supporters, BikeWalkKC needs your support to keep fighting for a community where people aren't required to "drive to thrive".

2025 has been a challenging year for nonprofits, so if you are in position to give, your gift will be very meaningful❤️
